keithbramer
I have an older acoustic J 45 with the serial # embossed on the top back of the headstock. # 921493. No other markings that I can find. It has a sunburst color with celluloid binding front and back. can anyone date this for me and tell me anything about the piece. I tried to go through the serial # info but can't seem to make it out. Appreciate the help... Thanks in advance! Keith
ksdaddy
Some 900000 numbers were used in 1968 but the highest number I can find for that year is 920899. The 900000 series was also used in 1970-72. The biggest difference would be the 70s models are likely to have "Made in USA" stamped into the back of the headstock (usually but not the rule). There are other differences so if you can post some pics I can try to determne for sure. If it's the 70s model I'm afraid it will be almost impossible to nail it down any closer than that range though. To post pics you will need to upload them to a host like photobucket or tinypic and then just post the URL here. Or feel free to email them to me and I will upload them. Bringo
Try this website out. It worked for me on my 1958 J 45. http://www.provide.net/~cfh/gibson.html

grampa
This is where I make some smart *** comment about if you want to date a J-45 you need a phone # not a serial #.
keithbramer
Thanks to all. I appreciate the help and insite. To Granpa, sorry but I cannot find a phone # stamped anywhere on the body so the serial # will have to do. To Bringo, your link helped a great deal and I thank you for that. Far as I can tell, it seems to be a 1969 made model. That site was wonderful. again I thank you all!!!

keithbramer
Thanks Mick, looks like it's a 68 then. Really appraciate all the info. I figured that the script on the headstock helped date it to 69 but your 3's look right. Thanks, keith
