The wife monster took her dog out to buy another car load full of toys so brought the tobacco burst Les Paul Standard down for a whirl.  She's never seen it and I plan on keeping it that way.  This is really the first bit of playing it that I've done so I'll try and do a mini review tomorrow.  I've got it set up right, now just see if I can get used to the stubby little beauty.  Compared to a Firebird it's missing about 4" of neck...

 

The only one I hid from Deb was a 12 string acoustic. She bought a cheap Oscar Schmidt for me years back and the neck was twisted and bowed. I took that one back for a replacement under it's warranty and later on I found a Very nice Yamaha 12 and traded the Oscar for the Yamaha.  Brought it home and never told her as I really hated to hurt her feelings about it. I had it in a case for a while and after a while I put it on the rack. She came in my guitar room many times and never did notice the difference. The Yamaha is much louder with a better tone. She never noticed that either.

My new Epiphone sang like a bird, it really likes my tube amp, I got to run it a bit hotter than normal outdoors today. The 59 reissue seems to be a faithful recreation.

Seriously Sparky, That was the scariest ride of my life. Couldn't believe there were no doors on the chopper and my brother in law was the 3rd passenger sitting next to the open doorway. Seat belts we had on but they were loose. Mike starts bragging to the pilot about his Vietnam days being a gunner by the open door with his feet hanging out.  So the pilot got the notion to scare the crap out of Mike but it only worked on me.  He did about everything except an upside down circle! I had my eyes closed hanging on to them both.

Forced day off from work so got to spend 6 hours playing this new Gold Top Standard.

Lot of truss rod, pick up, pole piece and string height adjustment but I think I've got it where it needs to be.

The 50s neck on this thing is really big so it will take an awful lot of playing time to make it feel like my guitar when I pick it up.  Initially it was at the super heavy thing with giant neck stage but it's getting there.

Man, those are great pictures and piloting a helicopter has been a life-long dream for me since I watched the TV show Whirlybirds when I was a kid. I've never even been in one but maybe some day.

Woke up at 5, played guitar until 6 and then worked from 6 AM to 6:30 PM.

It's like I want a guitar or something.

Where is Santa Steve's paycheck when he needs it???  And try to bring me something good and don't dump it down the chimney like a UPS driver would do.
Also discovered that the dog likes eating spaghetti which was pretty funny to watch.

Nice! I have the 60's neck on mine. Love it.

Small poodle puppy has a hard time with a mouth full of spaghetti.

That neck on that Gold Top is kind of a strange thing as it's smooth as can be, has really low frets and action but it doesn't have much taper to it and the nut is a bit high.

The sounds that come out of it, though, are just addictive.  I don't care what I'm playing, I just like hearing it.

Good for you Tman, Deb was telling me that they wouldn't get around to people like us till next year. Only Doctors and Nurses, Those in nursing homes and the most important ones would get it first.

The hospital said high risk people get it first, as they should, ICU nurses, infectious disease, etc. They were pretty organized and got it done within a day. I am 2nd tier, initially estimated mid January so I thought I've followed (what I think are) common sense guidelines so I'll wait until then and hopefully not get the virus.  We are in the midst of an exponential surge here in So. Cal on the order of thousands of new cases per day. ICUs are full. Hospital ER parking lots have tents to take care of very sick people who are dropped off. Honestly surreal.

I work in an outpatient center that sees about 30-40 patients a day during the pandemic I got a call from the hospital that said come on down, you are at risk especially now, we have enough to vaccinate in your category. They were pretty efficient. Not often said about big organizations. I'm thinking it will be that way all around. I bet it'll be available much sooner than people are expecting.

Several politicians and experts, including one at the CDC  are postulating that  vaccine priority be given to minorities over the elderly.    Funny how us old folks have been hearing we are hi-risk for 10 months but as soon as a 'cure' is available - it becomes political.  Teachers Unions are now saying they are equivalent to "First Responders" and should get them before the geezers.   

Sort of reminds me of the scene in the movie "Titanic"  where they're putting 'women and children' into the lifeboats and some sleazy guy gets caught cross-dressing to sneak on a boat.

Wife is health care, I'm an essential worker so we're just buying guitars and waiting.

Well, I'm the one buying guitars but at least one of us is doing the right thing.

They found out what's wrong with the wife: her heart is stopping.  They won't put a pacemaker in her as she's "only" 54 so they just keep futzing with her meds.

My suggestion was a doggie shock collar, just give her a good jolt every so often but she didn't seem too receptive to the idea.

I have to put my equipment away that is staged in my living room after having another excellent day playing into the jungle from a second story lanai with my 59 style Wilshire, it seems my other guitars are beginning to feel like excess weight. Hmmmm.

It was a gorgeous day. 

Walked the dogs, mid morning and late afternoon. 

Put the little Christmas tree in the storage closet and took down the Christmas lights that were in the windows and on the front of the house. 
Checked out all the lights, cross-leveled bulbs, and threw out a few strands of old lights when I went to store everything on the shelf in my garage. 

Ran the motorcycle up the road after I topped her off with ethanol-free gasoline and a splash of Sea Foam. 
Ran all the gasoline out of the lawn mower, and cycled some Sea Foam thru the tank/carburetor. 
Ran my generator, and poured some Sea Foam into the tank early in the operation. Put a load on her, shut her down, and checked the oil. 
Filled my wife's little BMW up with ethanol-free gasoline, and then did the same for the van. Topped off all the gas cans. 

I'm relaxing with a cold beer now, and preparing to make supper for the wife and I. 
Filet of cod in olive oil, garlic, and black pepper, with a side of Brussels sprouts.

I got lucky, the wife got her first vaccination and was gone all weekend and no work (for a change) so got to play the guitar, babysit a poodle puppy and watch football in peace.

Then she came back and so much for that.

35 the high here. Walked Sundance around the neighborhood, Deb went to sew with her friend so I played the Casino on the new pedal. I don't understand it for now? Too complicated so I'll have to watch more videos. It's a Zoom G3Xn with 150 effects. The directions that came with it aren't that good.

I watched videos of it being used and liked a few. When I opened this one on Christmas, I thought I knew how it worked. I started off going through the different effects and something popped up, "Record" so I thought, Why Not? Yep, it worked and recorded a song I played. Cool I thought. Then, the effects all disappeared and i couldn't get them back. I started pushing buttons and it screwed up stuff further. Put it away and got it out the next day and got closer back to the beginning. Obviously  I need to figure it out better. It will be a cool pedal once I figure it all out.

Deb & I watched the grandkids. I finally got the Plates for my Subaru Ascent. Might try it out tomorrow, We're supposed to get several inches of snow.
