EADGBE
My SG Special Faded has the 490R neck and 490T bridge pickups. I like the sound i get with my Vox AC15CC, but to be honest I like the beefier neck pup sound of a Les Paul Standard even more, specially when played clean. Would I get towards the Les Paul direction by switching the pickup to something else? What else to expect?
Demoryn
The pickup in the neck of an LP standard is a Burstbucker. I'm not saying that will give you the same sound, cuz you're dealing with two tonally different guitars, but it might get you closer. I have a 490 in the neck of my SG standard and I hate it. It's too muddy, and it lacks the clarity a vintage styled pickup gives you. It all depends on what you're after. Bottom line, there's no promises about how it'll sound if you swap pickups. You never can tell how a pickup is going to react with a specific guitar

Like Demoryn said, the guitars are totally different. The sound lies in the wood; an LP has a thick 'hog back with a maple cap, while an SG is a sculpted slap of 'hog. This has a big effect on how the guitar sounds, meaning an LP will have a beefier sound while an SG is a little more mid-high end sounding. Have you tried raising or lowering the pickup height? Maybe once you find the sweet spot, you'll be a bit more satisfied.
Murph
I think a 490R and a 57 Classic are pretty close to the same specs on the chart AXE posted a while back. I also think an SG actually has more mahogany in the body, than a chambered Les Paul. You might want to buy an all tube amp. Murph.
Demoryn
The 490/498 pickups are actually a lot different than the 57 Classics. For instance, my 498/490 combination didn't clean up very well when I turned my guitar volume down, they just lost power. The 57s clean up nicely, but don't lose as much punch. And I was going by the newer Les Paul Standards, which are equipped with a pair of Burstbucker Pros. My bandmate uses an LP with BBs in it In my experience, SGs sound lower and bassier than LPs, but that's just what I observed. I think it's because LPs have a maple top and SGs are full mahogany

hellion102792
Hmm, he's actually right about the new LP's having BB Pros, I just checked GC's and Gibson's website. Yeah, I was thinking of the older ones with the 490R/498T.
Murph
That's true, but.... My point is, the specs on a 490R and a 57 Classic are almost identical. I just tire of people dissin't the 490R because they read somewhere that they suck, and they don't. Best to ya. Murph.
Demoryn
I'm not saying that the 490R sucks. I've played it, and the 490T in several guitars, and they're good sounding pickups. It's all about what type of sound you want out of a guitar. I'm just saying that, for me, that particular pickup isn't doing the job. I prefer the 57s, and there is a difference. I haven't read a whole lot of reviews about the 490, so I'm not going by what others say. I'm only going on the experience I've had with the pickup: I've been playing with one for years
