I prefer the electronic drum sets too, makes for a much better stage volume and sound.  We are recording this week, they can't be beat for that.

I liked the ease of using Roland V-Drums, specially compared to an acoustic set played by a very physical drummer. Although trying to control  a stereo mix could be a problem, it was easier to take a direct output off the controller for each device directly into a mixer for recording. Or just use the stock stereo mix that was close to being mono.

My first exposure to V-Drums in 2000, they sounded great..

the Roland V Drums are the only way to go.  My son has a top of the line set, but he still uses his DW kits 98% of the time.  They are expensive...

They are expensive, but Roland keeps improving the feel of the drum head and making them react more like skins..

Electronic drums are still the best way to keep the overall band volume down..

Also on and off stage setup time is much less when everything is mounted to the drum frame... 🙂

agree and yes, they feel a lot more like a drum head,  compared to the rubber "pads" the less expensive, and earlier models were

But....... your drummers will probably still hate them.  🙂

Had a rehearsal yesterday. First real try out of a couple of new originals - a few senior moments 😄 here and there but I reckon these will be worked up to worthy inclusions in the set once we sort em out... Rock n Roll!

Rock and Roll - Good Stuff!!!!  Out of curiosity, what type of crowds are you playing for...  do they come to watch a show, or is it a party thing and you want to get them up dancing?

Unc, gigs round here nowadays (when there isn't a pandemic) are limited as not many pubs have live music even for covers bands. There are plenty of originals bands around and our best bet is to book a venue, get 3 or 4 bands to play a set each and run the whole night  (work the door, bring own PA etc). - which is cool cos you meet others. Other option is to rent a village hall and do the same. So yes, you can still get a gig but you have to do all the work !

crowds are probably like most places....cover bands draw people who like to sing and dance along to music they know, whereas originals mainly have others musicians show up to check us out plus a few local diehards who just love hearing original rock of all kinds....some really rock out, most stand with beer and nod quietly away. How's it work where you are?

Cool, I like the 3 - 4 band idea but do understand it puts all the work on you to make it successfully happen.  I think at that point it has to be because you want to play vs the money your making.

Our area...  I've no experience so can't really speak, (but trying to think of what type of show will work - because I got an itching to do one).  Live music in the area seems to be mostly acoustic solo stuff...  either covers or country blah bah de blah sound the same every song type of stuff.  Not good country like Taylor Swift (just kidding, put that in due to the other thread...)

Saying that - the bigness of your clips, the sound of the full band etc...  just hit me in the face - very cool.

Kidblast is local and a rockstar at that.  Maybe he can speak to the gigging scene.

Austin bills itself as "Live Music Capital of the US", or it use to.  This weekend, the governor shut the bars down again.  That is where most of the paying  'live music' in Austin takes place.  Lots of studios, etc. of course.  But this Second Shut Down is going to have a lasting impact on live music.

Man oh man, there are times I wish I was back home in  Maryland- just the fact that y'all can talk about getting ready for gigs is cool. Here in the UK/EU things are a bit different: bars and pubs are just starting to open up, but social distancing is being rigidly enforced and  currently no  indoor  entertainment is on the cards, and no outdoor entertainment/ live music that means folks cannot talk to each other  from 4 feet away,  which pretty much rules just about everything out. On top of that there appears to be a second wave coming, and many areas are being reshut down. The general consensus is there will be no live music here until next year, and even then it will be different.  Course noone can say what that means . I had a full year of gigs booked,  every one cancelled, and  bookings for next year festivals  which normally open up from about now are on hold.

That sucks.  We had a halfa dozen coming up, but we are not going to open indoor eating/drinking/entertainment as we were planning to tomorrow, July 2nd.  "Until further notice", which pretty much means this year.  Sucks.

Hey Scales, we were doing the same thing, we had a monthly residency at a music venue and were hosting our own gigs selling tickets, doing all the promo, and inviting other bands to come and play, for which they got  equasl share of any sales. Was working  quite nicely, and  for working bands might be a good way forward.

Are there any outdoor opportunities?  Not sure if it could work either - but a better chance at a socially distanced set up.  I'm jonesin for a good show.

Beach bars in AC, but they aren't open yet, should be next week.  Maybe.

It’s been too slow for me, but things are getting better.  I played outside at a winery last weekend and do the same place again tomorrow afternoon.  My regular winery gig resumes the 2nd week of August.  Nothing at the coffeehouses yet, until they’re opened at full capacity.   Hopefully in a couple more weeks.  ......People are chaffing-at-the-bit.  Get out and get some Vitamin D and kill this SOB virus.

So we rehearsed and had a good talk last night.  Seems that Almost Normal is now, well, Normal.  This area wasn't an economic powerhouse before all of this, so it is obviously way worse now.  We agreed that we have no place to play,  several of the places we haunted for decades now will not be back.  I had to take out the latest demo this week and do some old fashioned pavement walking in my area and it was all for naught, same for the other two guys.  The bars just aren't doing it, won't be for the foreseeable.   If they can't or won't hook up some kind of outside area they can't have bands, and fact is most of them just can't or won't spend the money.  The casinos are at a loss, they don't know what to do and aren't having any entertainment at all, they can't even feed people except for a hot dog you can carry away and go find someplace outside to eat it.  Drinks and dancing are out of the question.  Our other guitar player works down there and says it is costing way more to be open than it did to be closed, when they were screaming at the sky to OPEN UP.  Nobody saw that coming, right?  heh.

So if the big ones are having this much trouble we know we are in trouble all around.  So we'll rehearse and play for our toughest audience, us.  That's about it for this year.  Really really sad to have to say it and accept it.  The three of us just talk like Costner in Yellowstone, watching the world we knew slip away, for good.

Damn that sucks. You aren't that far from me and it's not as bad where I am. We lost a lot of good gigs for sure, but at least a few stuck. We even booked some new ones. Like MP above, we are playing a winery this weekend. Are there any of those in your area to check out? It's outdoors and plenty of room to spread out. Golf courses are another idea.

Sometimes it actually more fun to just get together and jam with no real purpose. No pressure to get this or that part down. Just keep it loose Good luck.

You are so right, sorry to say........I have no idea what’s coming back and what’s gone for good.  I don’t like the uncertainty....and the jackoffs in the news media appear to enjoy reporting bad news.

Yeah, couple wineries.  Years ago they all became Wedding and Family Celebration Venues.  Waste of time even trying for them, they don't do anything without 150 plate commitments for food and cash bar.  Weird.  Bars became restaurants so Timmy can have chicken fingers at ten o'clock at night, and wine bars and fire pits of adults drinking and enjoying the band became full time wedding joints that are now all screaming for business.  Sucks.

I attend a jam every weekend with a varying number of players, lately not that many. We gather on a second floor lanai in the open air with lots of space between us and usually don't wear masks while we are playing. When people wander in  to listen, they come in from the other end of the lanai in an area set up for them with plenty of space. I think that you may need to get creative in making a safe place to play with public exposure.. Rooftops, Garages, Trailers, Bandshells, Houseboats anything you can put together with outdoor access where people can gather at their own discretion, with a safe buffer between you and them.

That sounds idyllic. Sadly, where I live there is nowhere remote enough to play in the open without violating the peace!
