Gibson Hummingbird Dilemma!

So I had the chance to play the Gibson HB Original as well as a Martin HD-28 Reimagined in the guitar shop..Ā

Both beautiful guitars and both sounded like a dream. The neck profile of the Martin was something I wasn't used to and the action was way too high.

I am going to sleep on it but I think I am going to pull the trigger on the used HB Vintage..Ā Ā Ā

I have played a few HD-28V's and a HD-28 once I think.Ā  I don't like those necks on the V. I own 5 Martins and if your not used to the MLO (modified low oval), which the Re HD-28Ā  may have, you get used to it. Not sure what neck the Re HD-28 has though. Yes they do not suck.

High action can always be lowered.Ā  I set my D-18 up yesterday. I still need to lower the slots in the nut a touch.

strangely I canā€™t stop thinking about the Martin HD28. The neck profile was definitely different to what Iā€™m used to (I have an Epiphone Casino and a battered old Aria acoustic)Ā

How quickly do you get used to it? I was only in the shop for about a hour and it was alternating between the HB and the HD28

I like slimmer necks. Once you get a Martin it's a life long addiction.

I liked the 60's neck on my Les Paul.

On a serious note I'll be the first to say : You need them both.Ā

With a Bird or a J-45 and Mart rose dread you are home.Ā Ā

That is the ultimate goal. I have dreamt about owning both a Ā bird and a Martin since I first picked up a guitar. At the moment, Iā€™m only in the position to own one! Will need to save a few more pennies to get the other.

Ok so one more question for you guys..

Should I get the usedĀ Gibson Hummingbird Vintage 2017 or a brand new Martin HD-28 Reimagined?Ā

That's a question none of us can aswer for you, but I guess you already know that. I don't know if I dare to say this here, but if I were you I'd get the Martin. There is no guitar type more classic than a Martin D-28, period.Ā Then stay around this fine forum, and as soon as your guitar fund is filled up again, get the Hummingbird.

I was a bit wary of mentioning Martin on this forum - Being relatively new here, I fearedĀ I was going to get lynched by the good ol' Gibson gang whilst someone was strumming rolling stones acoustic songs in the background on their hummingbird..Ā

Joking aside - it's a real tough choice.. Both guitars are fantastic and I'd do well to own either one of them..Ā

One of the many fine things about this forum is that touching other brands isn't taboo. The members here simply know there are other fantastic guitars on the planet and the staff allows them to be mentioned. This createsĀ a breath - the Board has lungs and brains.Ā

As Lars says, it's impossible for anyone else to make the big decision. I would try myĀ favorite songs'n'style on the 2 and see which guitar answersĀ most fulfillingly. Then getĀ that one without forgetting the other.Ā

Personally I been playing D-35 since 1991, but that was before BozemanĀ returned in full blossom. A thing only discovered when my brother got a CW Sheryl Crow 10 years later. Another 10 years had to pass before I began playing Gibsons myself, , , , again (had 2 Norlin squares around 1980, which didn't work well - look Norlin up in case you don't know the meaning).Ā

Since 2010 Gibsons have been the most played in this temple. Got 3 Martins, which really are good, but I grab the Gs 3 times as often.Ā They have a personality within them, , , even call it soul where the Martins are more neutral (which can be seen asĀ a virtue too). Your idea of one of each is the only way forward - it will make you a happy man. JustĀ remember the M must be scalloped.

Now is the time forĀ step 1 and only your deeper intuitive feeling - yes, feeling is the key, the dilemma holds noĀ real rationale - will know and point out what is right. So exciting for you, , , and us as well.Ā

Write more as you go and good luck

Here are mine. I've also owed. 2 other D-15's, a D-35, a D-28, another D-18 and a D-35. All went for some reason, not because they were hogs. The 28 and 35 went to fund the 41. One of the D-15's I gave to my stepson for a HS graduation present, and the other one I traded for a Am Std Tele. PM me if you want to ask any Martin questions off line. The only mod done to any of them is I took the stock tuners off the 000-28 and put on Grover open back tuners. All have open back tuners except the 12 string.

The guitars from left to right are D-15M, J12-16GT, D-18, 000-28 and D-41. All standard models.

This is great - it's all always good to get a balanced opinion from people who really know their guitars and understand the pros and cons. Ultimately though its always down to personal preference.. another man's junk is another man's gold!

Yes the choosing stage is definitely exciting and all part of the journey!Ā

That D-41 one on the end looks absolutely majestic!Ā

It is, but I have been told it looks gaudy. Nice to see another Beatles themed screen name.

You should see, I think its Patriot Biker that has a D-41 Special. The back is absolutely jaw dropping.

Fellow Gibson Enthusiasts/Enablers, is there a picture that he could request from the seller with the TV to help reassure that the potential for permanent humidity damage is not an issue? I often point to the Taylor site's dry/wet guitar pages, but am hesitant to on this because I don't want to assume one company's standard angles are good for the others and visa versa

That aside, I really do like the torefied tops. I only have it one one guitar, though, and never played one of the prior years' models that did not have the baked top. In other words, I am basing this on nothing at all close to legitimate A/B testing.

There's good reason for that. I played a few of the 28, HD28, and one 35 that I can't remember if it was and HD or not. They were all different. Mine turned out to sound as nice as it looks. I can't even begin to describe the guitar nirvana that is having both of them out at the same time, with perfectly broken in strings, playing and alternating every few songs.Ā

Mine is the same as yours, I think - the Re-imagine series.Ā  I lucked out.

Hi all,

I have done a lot of thinking and have decided to go with the Martin HD-28 Imagined.

The Gibson Hummingbird Vintage after a poor exchange rateĀ plus postage/shipping, the guitar wasn't that muchĀ of a bargain as I anticipated. Although a torrified top would be great, there is too much risk for me not to have the safety of a warranty. One day, I'll definitely get a Gibson acoustic though (either J45 or Hummingbird).

I think I will be getting the HD28 in natural but I did like the look of Ambertone and Sunburst.. The guitar shop owner also informed me that the Sunburst is the last one in the UK!

Someone has a 41 Special. Yes mine is a 2019 so it must be Re-imagined.Ā

You will not regret it. I am not a fan of Martin's without natty tops. Shadetops as the Martin aficionados call them.Ā  As you can tell from my pic. The D-15M is a butt ugly guitar but sounds killer.Ā

With all due respect,Ā  this is not entirely correct in my experience.Ā  A 'wet' guitar sounds very mushy and lacking in punch, and the top behind the bridge swells.Ā  Sometimes it can be hard to reverse that swelling.Ā Ā

I dug the Ambertone on a couple of 41s (and up) that I saw online, but none were for sale. The deals we got made buying brand new an obvious thing to do, so no sense in pushing and waiting. That combo of Ambertone and the 4x series, though - dang fine. Lars68 has an 'addy topped with the Ambertone 28 (forget which exact model) that looks nice in pics he's posted.

A kinky thought while perusing a national store's offerings. Perhaps others will chime in on the differences. The Cheryl Crow sig model is baked-top and advanced bracing. It should be a boisterous at a minimum. If not getting a bird due to standard top, Hyde glue, too, for whatever that's worth in real life. I could not find a good source for differences between the bird and the SC Country Western model. Most specifically, size differences.

Well, enjoy your guitar decision thought free day. šŸ˜Ā
