vertigoPT
Hi! I have a LP Studio Faded with black "speed" knobs and bought Gibson gold bell knobs. I though they were all the same size but the bell knobs don't seem to go as deep as the black ones. They don't seem to go all the way in. What's the deal with that? Are there different knob sizes or I just have to apply more pressure to insert then?
dp71
Hi! I have nothing to add really except that I did the same as you did, and mine also didn't seem to go as far in. I don't know why that is, but I've left it like that and it works fine!
BigKahune
the factory bells/hats have a shorter sleeve (the control spindle fits into on the underside) so the knob sits lower, like the speed knobs. the replacement bells/hats frequently have a longer sleeve so they sit higher. some people grind down the sleeve on the new ones a bit to get them to sit lower. hellion102792
I noticed after I took the knobs off my SG to try something that when I put the old ones back on, they didn't go as low as they previously did. I don't know if they have a machine push it onto the pot at the factory, but I didn't want to push too hard for fear of damaging the pot or cracking the wood. Rather risk ruining the new buttons then damaging the pots or the guitar! ;) They look really stupid the way they are now... :o
Warren Brown
I posted the same question a while back. I think if you try to grind down the inside portion of the knob it will grind off the paint along with the plastic, which will be seen through the clear part of the knob. If the knobs were a solid color, that idea might work, but since the knobs are clear I don't think it would look very good unless you had a way to machine them down evenly and had matching paint to repaint them. I wonder why they don't make replacements that will fit.
vertigoPT
So how did you solve the problem Warren?
BigKahune
use a small grind too like a dremel http://www.dremel.com if you can find one to borrow gind just the sleeve (under and inside the bell/hat), not the outside of the bell/hat. most bell/hats are solid color and this proceed shouldn't show. if you got an old one lying around, try it on that first. kubog
Allways buy original Gibson replacement knobs! Never buy copies etc. they dont fit (the hole is too small) and you can damage your pot (like me)

I think it's a shame that they sell knobs that don't fit.
kubog
Those copies actually do fit. But not on Gibson pots. They fit on my Gotoh replacement pots I have in case of damage.
