Memorial "Concert" Last Night

We had a good friend pass away last month.  He was a former cop who had been a stalwart on the local music scene since the early-1970s.   So his friends decided we needed to do something for him.  A member of the Village Council arranged for the use of a small park with a bandstand.  All acoustic with two bass players, a percussionist, a harp player and six guitars.  No practice beforehand or setlist, just songs our friend liked to play so  "Outside Woman Blues", "Wild Horses" a blues shuffle in A which  turned into a slow moving "Carol" when somebody started singing the lyrics, and such.  Lots of stories.  No tears but a whole lot of smiling.    It was particularly fitting when a cop hit his lights and siren just as he was passing the park to snag a speeder.   Anyway, a perfect way to say goodbye to a friend and a reminder he would never be forgotten.

I only met Don (our deceased friend ) some two years ago when he was  working in a small local music shop doing minor repairs (which he had done after leaving the force and working at a  Guitar Center), giving lessons, and holding monthly clinics.  So the only time I played with him was just sitting around the store.   As there was  only word of mouth advertising  just a few folks, including the Mayor (whose other job is as a waitress to give you an idea of just how small this town is), showed up.   But the whole affair was more for those of us who were his friends and felt we needed to do something to serve as a fitting goodbye.

Nice send off, ZW
