RMC5446
Hello - does anyone know the size truss rod wrench needed for a J-185 Acoustic reissue? I purchased in the early 2000s. I bought a 5/16th and it's too small and wanting to confirm prior to buying another size. Thank you for the help!
62burst
That's strange- 5/16" is considered to be the right size. I use an 8mm socket. fyi: 5/16" converts to 7.9375mm. One thing, though- the wall of the socket you're using might be too much for the snug quarters where the tr adj nut resides.
Leonard McCoy
With Gibson guitars, the truss rod nut is often enveloped in lacquer or the truss rod cavity, while not too small itself, has a thick coat of lacquer so that you often need, for the first few times anyways, to use a little force to get the truss rod socket properly connected onto the nut. Your guitar should have come with the right truss rod wrench. If in doubt, buy a new one, or the multitool, directly from Gibson. RMC5446
Thank you - I believe that what's happened is that the one I purchased from Amazon isn't actually a 5/16 size. Let me get another one and I bet it'll work.

RMC5446
okay - yes, so the one purchased from Amazon was definitely not 5/16 despite it being labeled as such. I bought a new one that actually is 5/16 and it works great! Thank you all for responding. Keep rocking!
