If Gibson and Fender went out of Buiness

Recommended Posts

i would build my own guitars using a mix of my own supplies and stuff from places like warmoth. and also axes suggestion of hamer would be a option for me. i have heard that heritage guitars are good too.

In the Spirit of the topic, I'd go with G&L and PRS. That way it's at least Leo Fender and Pat McCarty's Brain Children.

However, if Gibson and Fender went out of business, they'd be bought by an investment group and resurected. Then they'd either be Crap (Fender, when bought by CBS) or they'd come back stronger than ever (Fender when Bill Shultz and a small band of Employees bought Fender from CBS), it all depends on the managment of the new ownership.

It'd be a shame, but realistically speaking, I've got just about everything I want from both manufacturers (Gibson LP, SG and 335; Fender '51, Classic '50s, and fretless Precisions) so it'd be academic.

If it were new instruments that I wanted, I'd go with Heritage. They make really attractive guitars using Gibson manufacturing methods and fixtures. And G&L for basses: I used to gig with an L2000 and it was almost as good as a Precision.

Bear in mind that the "c ore value" for Gibson guitars (always) has been a well-made guitar (for the price). The same is true of other guitars. Superior craftsmanship and superior tone. (so that is why performers want them). That was true in 1950, it is true today and it will be true in 2050. Same for pianos, horns, violins, etc. Same for Mercedes, BMW, Porshe, Ferrari. Same for Cessna. Also bear in mind that experience with a product line builds it reputation (or ruins it) and the better guitar makers have earned their place with consistently superior guitar for the dollar -- Look at these Greven http://www.grevenguitars.com/

Yamaha http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/Multimedia/Guitars/Flash/Product_Finder_AG.htm

Martin http://www.martinguitar.com/

There is always COMPETITION to be the best quality and the best performance (except, of course, under socialism in which case there is no incentive -- no advantage to doing the BEST, being the BEST)
