stealthpaws
Hi - I'm seeking information on the serial number imprint on the back of my Dove. According to the info I've found, it is a 1970-72 and manufactured at either Kalamzoo or Nashville. The serial number is stamped into the back of the headstock, then underneath "Made in the USA" - then under that is the numeral "2". They are all imprinted into the wood. Can anyone tell me what this extra number (2) means? I'm thinking of selling this guitar so I'm trying to get accurate information Thanks!
guitarstrummer
I believe it means that it was a factory second.
anthonyc007
I have a 1970 Dove. A possible way of telling if it is a 1970 and not 71 or 72 is these items: 1. double parallelograms in lieu of blocks 2. adjustable bridge 3. single x-brace
stealthpaws
I believe it means that it was a factory second. What does that mean exactly? Does it mean that this is considered a lesser quality instrument? It's got one heck of a good sound. I've owned it since 84, played it alot, and never even thought about serials, etc. I had a Barcus Berry pickup installed in it some years back, as I played professionally- so...would this be considered a non-salable instrument, or one of low value? If so, too bad...I really love it. Only thinking of selling cuz I need the $$- and if it isn't worth much, I won't. Thanks again for your input- I don't know anything about all this sort of thing. guitarstrummer
Yes, it would generally be worth less. It could have been a second for any number of reasons and there wouldn't be any way of knowing why at this time. Gibson used to sell their seconds, but no longer do that. The seconds were marked with a "2" under the serial number. If you like the sound, you might be better off hanging onto it.
TheLiveSoundGuy
Everything has a value. Even a "2nd." Sometimes whatever it was that made it a second is so slight (like over spray) you never even can find it. Post some pics of it, put a price on it, and see what kind of offers it brings. I've seen them go anywhere from $300.00 - $8,000.00 depending on numerous factors. Like GuitarStrummer said, if you don't like the offers, keep it and continue to enjoy it. Good Luck

Good Luck[/quote'] ok...last newbie question...I promise. Where would I post it? I'm not much of an ebay enthusiast. Is that the only option? I'm sorta stumped here. If it's a second, I'm going to assume that most of the vintage places wouldn't be interested in it. That's what I was originally going to do, but it doesn't seem worthwhile going to the trouble at this point. PS...I should add here that I also have a 62 es-330 (TDC I think) so I've been contacting vintage dealers concerning that one. I'm not having a lot of luck yet, and so I'm considering selling both - and I'm completely out of my league when it comes to knowing stuff about vintage guitars. guitarstrummer
In general, I think you'd get the fairest price by posting it on a guitar forum, such as this forum. I'm not a fan of E-bay either. You could also try Craigslist. You never mentioned why you want to sell it. Are you looking to fund another guitar purchase? If so, you might try trading it in at your local music/guitar store and see what they'd offer you for it in trade. It might be more than you'd get off of E-bay. By the way, welcome to the forum. stealthpaws
Why? well... life is more or less demanding money I don't have. The guitars are pretty much all I have left to try to raise some. I hate having to sell them, even though I don't really play anymore.
guitarstrummer
I just checked the current edition of the Blue Book of Acoustic Guitars and they list the price range for 1970-1984 Doves as $1700 - $2000 for excellent condition and $1000 - $1200 for average condition. I can't find any valuation for seconds listed.
TWilson
I sold a guitar and a mandolin by putting an add in my local newpaper. Both times, the people that bought them called me on the first day they appeared in the paper, played them and pulled the trigger. I sold another guitar by putting an add on the bulletin board at work with photos, description and specs. If you trad it in or sell it on consignment at a music store you will get less money for it. Music stores usually take 25% of the sale and in trade it's just like trading in your car. The dealer wants to make his profit too, so he generally gives you less than what it's worth. I must say, however, that I did trade a guitar in at a shop in the 70's and got $200 for it. My roommate went back the next day to buy it and they sold it to him for $200! I thought that was a straightup deal. Anyway, good luck.
stealthpaws
Lol @ your sig line Terry. I guess I don't have to grow up. Ok, I'll post some pics somewhere if I can find an appropriate spot here
stealthpaws
I don't see any area here that seems appropriate to post "for sale" guitars. I'll just post some pics here later and see what happens, if that's ok.

TheLiveSoundGuy
I try to scour the local Craigslist daily. I'm always on the lookout for a great guitar at fair price. Like someone here mentioned earlier, get a Photobucket (it's free) account and post them here. Most of the cats that hang out in here will steer you in the right direction. Guest
If your Dove is an early 70s, it is Kalamazoo-made. Production did not switch to Nashville for acoustics until considerably later, by which time, they had adopted a more reliable serialization system. I would disagree that a 2nd would now be worth less than a non-second. When the guitars were being produced by Gibson -- mostly in the 60s and 70s, as I understand -- ones that came through the final inspection and were found to have a flaw of some sort, usually consisting of a cosmetic detail, were stamped "2" and sold at a lower price to reflect that blemish. (Today, by contrast, guitars that would then have been marked as second are to be sent to the bandsaw and become garbage.) In all likelihood, the cause of the guitar's "secondness" by now may have become unnoticeable, with wear and use and smudging, etc. If the guitar is a good-sounding, good-looking and reasonably intact specimen, as prices escalate for the 30+ year old guitars, the offset in 'value' of a 2nd vs a 1st would be reduced, and in many cases, it may not even be possible to discern a price difference attributable to the 2. (In my opinion.) Fred
TheLiveSoundGuy
TWilson I really like your Avatar. Nice touch of class there. I know I for one would love to see pics of this Dove we have been discussing in this forum. Grand Prairie is not that far from me. So welcome to the forums stealthpaws. Good to see other Texas folk here. Also, George Gruhn at Gruhn Guitars in Nashville will give you an honest estimate on it's value. If you check you will find his reputation is impeccable. He holds a very high standing in the guitarist community.

stealthpaws
Ok...rather than overwhelm the forum w/pictures, I prepared a slide show here: http://www.saorsastudios.com/guitarshow/guitarshow.html hope you guys like my guitar. I played it, dirty strings and all, for a few minutes. I really love this thing.
TheLiveSoundGuy
Now I'm home sick. That looks just like the old gal I played when I was growing up. The only exception would be the rosewood saddle. Mine had the adjustable ABR type bridge. You are a very lucky fellow. It has aged nicely! On a side note, what I can only assume to be your other half, does some very nice artwork with the beads! One of these days I'll have to get down to the Renaissance Fair. Take care of it with a girl that age, (the guitar, not the wife) ya never know how many years she'll have left. -TLSG

TheLiveSoundGuy
Sorry Connie. Color me embarrassed. I guess that's not your "other half" that does the nice bead work then. You should use the photo on your website in your avatar. That would clear up any confusion. You are one very luck lady then. The guitar is a beauty, as is your craft work. stealthpaws
No need to be embarrassed...it happens a LOT. lmao. Anyhow, thank you on both counts. I thought I'd email that place one of you suggested with a pic, and see what they think. I heard from the place that specializes in archtops - for the ES 330- but I'd have to ship the thing, and I don't have a hard case for it. It's been living in a gig bag for years and years. Not sure about shipping like that. I think I'll also check out Craig's list. I just don't want to get "stuck" HAVING to sell either one for less than it's value because of some stupid mistake in listing I'm unaware of. That happened to me on eBay with beads- it's very frustrating. Ok..you guys have a GREAT day!
