TheLiveSoundGuy
I can't speak on the 330, but if the Dove were mine, I would take no less than $2,500.00 Actual value could be much higher! However depending on the stability of the top cracks, it could be much lower as well. I know I'd love to own it. Wait to see what George Gruhn tells you. If only I hadn't just bought the Hummigbird. Jinder
BEAUTIFUL Dove, Stealth. I have to say, I think the Dove is the most beautiful acoustic guitar ever made. I can't look at one without kinda feeling a little fuzzy inside. The fact they sound incredible is icing on the cake too. One day I will snaffle one to go with my SJ200. Hell, I'm a 6'6", 18 stone guy, with beard...I can play all the "girly" guitars I want!! In fact, last summer I played at a roots/blues festival, and the guy on before me had some godforsaken junkshop acoustic, and when I passed him on my way to the stage he smirked and said "heh. Nice manly guitar" (I was holding my SJ200), to which I replied "Yeah, you're lucky-not only is your guitar manlier than mine, you can also use it to paddle your canoe home with after your gig!" He didn't have much to say after that. Man, I love hecklers.
stealthpaws
LMAO Jinder! I love ppl who can think of that stuff WHILE it's appropriate. Ok, I went to the Gruhn page- I'd love to have it appraised, but unfortunately there's no way I can come up w/$50. The only reason I'm even considering selling the guitar is cuz I'm so desperate for $$....I just don't have it. So, if anyone knows anyone who is interested, serious, and who is willing to pay a fair price, pls let them know about it ok? Oh, and that crack has been there pretty much as long as I've had the guitar...it's just become more noticeable with age...so it doesn't seem to affect the tone. I know IF it goes through the top that it's a stress on the structure, but so far it's been ok. I'll PM my contact info to you if you find someone interested. Meantime, I'll go check out the electric section and see what ppl have to say about the 330. TTYl y'all. PS...JINDER!!!!! DUDE....YOU'RE AWESOME! I'm listening to your MySpace recordings...I LOVE it! Beautiful guitar picking and a very sexy voice. lol....even with your girly guitar! Serious...I'm gonna be looking for some of your music when I dig myself outta this hole I'm in. sycephant
Hope this isn't sacreligious but I have a 1970 something Alvarez Dove copy. My dad bought it way back and I learned to play on it. Ever since then I've wanted the real deal but until that day I still have this one. It's more just eye candy nowadays as it doesn't play too well. I recently cleaned it up. stealthpaws
It's a nice Alverez...I had no idea that one company could "copy" another company's style so completely. hmmmmm..... Anyhow, I went ahead and e-mailed Gruhn Guitars anyway. All they can do is say no, right?

Anyhow' date=' I went ahead and e-mailed Gruhn Guitars anyway. All they can do is say no, right? [/quote'] Hey Connie, I think Alvarez, Ibanez as well as many others (Ventura, Aria, Cort,) paid the price for it. They all had some very well known lawsuits brought to their doorstep by Gibson in the the mid to late 70's. I can't recall the outcome exactly right now, but considering they no longer even come close to Gibson's designs I tend to believe it was in Gibson's favor. The Alvarez guitars are very nice in fact. But I believe they are made with a rosewood back and sides. The maple, and flamed maple that Gibson used is what made their sound special and uniquely bright when compared to others. Just the fact that you can still find some of the lawsuit models around should tell you how well made they were. They were tanks. Very well crafted. Anyway I ramble... Let us know what you here from Gruhn. I'm curiously anxious.

What condition is it that doesn't make play too well? Something more than just a good set-up? A whole neck reset can run into some bucks, but a good set-up isn't all that much, and can make a world of difference. It appears to be in good shape for it's age. At least in the photos. stealthpaws
well guys...I heard from Walter Carter @ Gruhn. I have to say I'm disappointed. I had hoped for a higher estimate. I'm still waiting to hear from Elderly Instruments - I went through their website, so I have no idea how long they take. I want to get another opinion and compare them before I make any final decisions on what to price it. Also, Mr. Carter didn't tell me whether it was retail value or what THEY would pay for it. sycephant
It's in great shape. It only needs a new nut actually, just haven't gotten around to it. I replaced the bridge not too long ago. The original (tune o matic) was bowed like a U. It was crazy. I've never seen a bridge bend like that. I've also never seen a tunomatic on an acoustic before. The top is a little bowed but not too bad. For it's age, it is in awesome shape. The frets are barely even worn. It's a beautiful guitar. The rosewood really stands out on the back. I'll have to get a pic of that up.

stealthpaws
Ok...I've posted my Dove on Craigs List. It's breaking my heart to have to sell this, but I gotta. Here's a link. I placed it in Houston for now, because I'd rather not have to ship it. If you are interested, contact me via CL and we'll work something out. Here's a link. Thanks to all of you for your help and kindness....I'd have never been able to figure out all this stuff if it weren't for you guys. http://houston.craigslist.org/msg/615754144.html
Johnt
In all likelihood' date=' the cause of the guitar's "secondness" by now may have become unnoticeable, with wear and use and smudging, etc. If the guitar is a good-sounding, good-looking and reasonably intact specimen, as prices escalate for the 30+ year old guitars, the offset in 'value' of a 2nd vs a 1st would be reduced, and in many cases, it may not even be possible to discern a price difference attributable to the 2. (In my opinion.) Fred[/quote'] Agree completely my 79 J45 at one stage had a "2" too. Only some idiot gouged it out so they could fool another idiot (that'll be me then!) I have owned the guit since 1982 and since then the blemish around the soundhole and the uneven lacquer have matured and are practically unnoticeable. Either that or I have used the guitar so much and in the process it's got a bit smacked about and those scars have hidden the original blemish! You want to know how to "weather" a "2" guitar?? Lend it to your son who "just needs to put down an acoustic track and will take great care of it and never let anyone else play it" Unless they've got a belt with a prominent buckle!!! Hey Ho! hicktowngirl66
Well, I thought I'd join in since this is the only forum I found where someone was talking about a copy of a Gibson Dove. Here's my baby. I got her from my grandfather before he passed. I have no idea what brand it is, or when it was made. It has no stickers, nothing on the headstock .. nothing at all. But it sounds pretty good. The chords ring forever, and the bass is amazing. Lydia
TheLiveSoundGuy
I looks like it could be either a Ventura or a Lyle. I don't really know though, I'm just guessing. They usually put their brand on the headstocks. There were a lot, and I mean a lot of Dove copies. It was a real popular and radically different design of the time. I find it interesting that the parallelogram inlays are slanted in the opposite direction, compared with most.

hicktowngirl66
Lol. Thanks for the welcome. I never noticed that about the inlays laying in the opposite direction. Good eye! Oh I also meant to say that there is a small sticker, just a regular removable sticker, that says FG560S. Its a gold sticker on the back of the headstock. I had noticed before that Yamaha's had a similar code on their guitars but I can't find any record of this guitar on their website. Yamaha's also have their name on their guitars. I guess this guitar's true identity will never be known. ;) Lydia
