ES 339 Gibson

Looking to buy a ES 339 Gibson at musicians friend,15% off which gets the price down to 1954.00. Waiting to hear how many dollars in loyality points I have to bring down further. I have an Epiphone ES 339 which I really like, but really want the Gibson and 57s.

I was on the hunt for an ES336  but there's only used ones, and if I'm gonna spend that much on a used guitar I need to look it over as I got burned on a used guitar before.

Prolly gonna end up buying this one.

I think ES-339 Gibson is too young to get the ICONIC status being introduced in 2007. However, both the Gibson and Epiphone versions seem to have taken over the tone world by storm.. I haven't stopped playing mine since it arrived.

Note: the materials used are very similar.

The Gibson uses a Maple centerblock, with 3-ply Maple/Poplar/Maple top and back, with a Mahogany rounded C profile neck and Nitro.

The new Epiphone uses a Maple centerblock, with Layered Maple top and back, with a Mahogany rounded C profile neck and Poly finish. The previous Epiphone model was pretty much the same except it has a D profile slim taper neck..

I'm weak, had buyers remorse before I bought it,but bought it anyway.

345.00 off,180.00 in points to buy other stuff.

Makes it a decent deal considering people want 2000 or more on reverb. Here if I'm not satisfied I got 45 days to return.

Sounds like a good deal, the 2020 listing is 2.3k to 2.9k.

You can always do what I do: when I croak they'll belong to you and then you can sell them.

That always brings a smile of my wife's face (and probably thoughts like "that can't happen soon enough").

So that's what Karen's smiling about.lol

I also really want a 336 and have been on the lookout for one.. I am hoping Gibson make some more some time soon..  Its the neck profile...  If a 339 had the same profile I would probably go for one of those but I believe they are somewhat thicker than whats on a 336...

After playing the epiphone and the Gibson back and forth with the same amp, etc. the Gibson won the battle in every way. Not that there's anything wrong with the Epiphone, the Gibson just was better. Damn glad I spent the money, cuz I'm digging it immensely. It was about 1200 more with discounts and reward money so it was a good buy. Reverb prices were too high for a used git I can't see spending more for used than new guitar with no recourse if it's a bad one.

Happy for you that you decided to go for it, sounds like you got a good deal too on a new one.  I was going to ask playing them side by side if there was much difference, but you already answered that - since the Gibson wins hands down are you thinking of selling the Epiphone now?  I mean how often are you going to play it when the better one is sitting right there begging to be played?

Anyway a good first world problem to have - enjoy.

I'm glad you got the Gibson 339, because if you had the opportunity and passed you probably would have regretted it. There is really is no comparison between a Gibson that sells for 5X the Epiphone price.

Also I think you mentioned that you have the Epi 339 Pro which has the slim taper neck, coil tapping, Kluson style tuners and a poly finish. The 2020 Epi is modeled to be more of a replica of the Gibson version with a Rolled C neck, no coil tapping uses full sized CTS pots, Grover Rotomatics but does the poly finish.

I probably gone for the Gibson ES-339 with P90's a long time ago if it wasn't for the Nitro finish.. So because the new 2020 Epi was not available with P90's, I had to build my own with my favorite HB sized Mean 90's.. 🙂

I know you are enjoying your new Gibson 339 at least as much as I am enjoying my Epi.. 🙂

God bless Gibson......

How much of that difference can be attributed to things you can't change about the Epi (type of wood, name on the headstock, headstock shape)?  That's a lot of clams for a logo ....

The Gibson and the Epiphone use Maple as the main wood, the Gibson has a 3-ply Maple/Poplar/Maple top and back , while the Epiphone uses Layered Maple.

A fairer comparison between Gibson and Epiphone would be to compare a Gibson model that is perhaps closer in cost to an Epiphone.

Or, compare a US made Casino to an ES- 330, maybe... 🙂

I'm aware of the differences in wood.  I'm not convinced it's the difference in the wood they use that makes a Gibson play better.  And the tonal difference after going through pickups, pedals and and amp?  Probably not as noticable as you would think.   So where does the value really lie?

Epiphones are mass production machine cut, where Gibsons have more hands on, I think.

I have 3 guitars with Mean 90's in them, one is in Ash, one in Mahogany and now one set in Layered Maple with a Maple centerblock. They all sound slightly different. But you can still tell they are Mean 90's.
