Labour costs, obviously and - a distinguished American brand name, and they do play better AFAIK. But of course a good player can do their thing on either!! 2
mihcmac
My current Epiphones are wonderful to play, I would not trade any of them for a Gibson. If you don't buy your dream label, you will most likely be disappointed. Edited December 9, 2020 by mihcmac
jdgm
I couldn't put a figure on it but labour costs are far higher in the USA than the far East. 1
mihcmac
It just goes to show you that people in the US are willing to pay more for their stuff than anyone else in the world.

I was going to ask playing them side by side if there was much difference, but you already answered that - since the Gibson wins hands down are you thinking of selling the Epiphone now? I mean how often are you going to play it when the better one is sitting right there begging to be played? Anyway a good first world problem to have - enjoy. Oh I'm gonna play them both that would be guitar neglect.

There is really is no comparison between a Gibson that sells for 5X the Epiphone price. Also I think you mentioned that you have the Epi 339 Pro which has the slim taper neck, coil tapping, Kluson style tuners and a poly finish. The 2020 Epi is modeled to be more of a replica of the Gibson version with a Rolled C neck, no coil tapping uses full sized CTS pots, Grover Rotomatics but does the poly finish. I probably gone for the Gibson ES-339 with P90's a long time ago if it wasn't for the Nitro finish.. So because the new 2020 Epi was not available with P90's, I had to build my own with my favorite HB sized Mean 90's.. 🙂 I know you are enjoying your new Gibson 339 at least as much as I am enjoying my Epi.. 🙂 God bless Gibson...... I still like the Epiphone 339,the Gibson feels a bit thicker on the neck, and I think it's lighter, also the body seems thinner, but I never measured.

The Gibson does have the slightly thicker rounded C profile neck which my new model Epi 339 also has.. It does feel a little slimmer than my 56 LP Std that has a 50's C profile.
merciful-evans
This is interesting because we have different perceptions of how these guitars feel. Though we can agree they are certainly different. I compared a bunch of Epi & Gibson 339s (though not at the same shop, nor on the same day). The Epi 339 has a rounded C neck. For me, I found them more chunky; more of a handful than the Gibsons. I also had the Epi Casino Coupe which is the same shape but a full hollowbody. That had a 'slim taper D profile'. That certainly was a fuller heavier neck. I would swap between that and the Gibson 339 quite a bit, but again, with different hands playing them... ?! Its another good reason to try guitars out personally.

I recall someone here in a similar situation saying they sometimes returned (exchanged) a few guitars just in order to compare them.

On my square mile there's 4 of us, and my nearest neighbor is 1 mile away. My farmstead sits on the lower part of it,so I can't see any other farmsteads from here. The air is fresh and wildlife is plentiful so I'm grateful to live here.
Blues2use
I've owned 3 different Epi 339s, liked them,, sold both. And, two different Gibson 339s. Loved them. Have one now. The Epis are very nice. Especially the price point. But, I could never really get the Epiphones to sound or play like I wanted them to. They always seem to need fret leveling somewhere. They are not that comfortable to play standing up (for me). The new "Inspired by Gibson" are very nice and seem to weigh around 8 pounds, while the Gibsons are around 7 pounds. This means a lot to me when gigging. The Gibson 339 (to me), is a much more refined ($$$) instrument that plays and sounds better. It is comfortable to gig with and holds its value as a used instrument. With anything else the more refined the faster the jump in cost.
mihcmac
I am really digging the Rounded C profile neck on my "Inspired By Gibson" Epi ES-339. It is very comfortable for me and easy access al the way to 22. The Alnico Classic Pro Humbuckers sound pretty decent, but being a P90 guy I replaced them with Mean 90's. Not o worry though I put the Alnico Classic Pro's in my G400 that I needed to sell and guy that bought it is really digging them.. Its all good.. I saw Joan and the Blackhearts as openers for Plant (Now and Zen tour) in El Paso in the late '80s. She's definitely iconic.
