New Jeff Beck

Recommended Posts

Jeff's playing is on a whole different plane from everyone else.  It sounds like he's using a slide but it's all his unique and incredible playing technique.

I saw him live once and it was so intense.  It was like he played every note twice.   Just melodic overload.  And then towards the end, he's in the middle of this crazy solo and it's just him and his fender strat.  As he played the last note, he unstrapped and dropped it on the stage - like a "mic drop" but with a guitar.   Wham! Eeeeeeeeeee!!!

If yer a guy my age and grew up guitar when I did, you hear one note and before that note has passed you know it is Him.  I think the greatest guitar voice in history.

That was cool Steve, thanks for posting.  Jeff Beck has been one of my favorite guitarists to listen to for a long time.  And I see he still has that cute girl playing bass (Tal), and she can rip it up too.  I wasn't aware that Depp could sing, but he did a nice job on this.  Looks like a set list laying on the floor so they must have put a entire show together.

Beck has always been so advanced in his sounds and his playing, since the Yardbird days.  And while they were doing pretty much blues back then he always had a fresh take on the guitar parts he played.  Glad to see he is still at it, and did not let fame, and fortune screw up his life like so many others have.

Great, I loved it. I didn't know Johnny Depp played guitar? First I heard of it.  My wife is a big fan of his and has never mentioned it to me.  Loved them together.

Why is it rockers what to be actors and actors what to be rockers.

Johnny has been playing music for a long time.  This video is almost 30 years old (yikes!).  If you watch his hands, you can tell he at least played a little at that point.

There was also an episode of "21 Jumpstreet" where they had to go undercover in a music school and he played "Monkey Man" by the 'Stones.  I can't find video of that one.

There are two important sides to be a great musician (1) technique (2) art

IMO Jeff Beck is the most technological proficient rock guitarist who has ever recorded (up to this point anyway).

He's definitely not too shabby in the art department either.

Playing is what I and Depp do. Being good is not what Depp and I are.

Well I can't speak for your playing, but totally agree about Depp.  It's more like "not entirely terrible ... for a Hollywood actor".

I bet you're better than you think you are.   I was my own worst critic for a long time.  If you feel that way it might be because you have a good ear and can't handle the imperfections.

Beck started playing cello when he was young, and he attacks the strings of his guitar with much the same technique,  IMO it also shows in his melodic approach to solos,  the sustain and tremelo,  use of fluid octave modulation,  very similar to classical cello,

It also helps to have your fretboard scalloped slightly.

Yes, from what I have seen he is a little weird. Figured it was his acting?

Like most of those who've been around Hollywood too long, they start believing they're not quite like the rest of us.   It's a self fulfilling prophecy, because in the end, they are nothing like normal people.

What I know about Johnny Depp is next to nothing but last night he popped up on a youtube video I stumbled upon.

It was The Hollywood Vampires and there was Alice Cooper, about 80 years old, and it looks like he'll have to replace the boa constrictor with a garter snake or else he'll get beat up.  And there was Johnny Depp.  First time I ever saw someone with a Reverse Flying V but there's at least one out there in action.

He also had an Alvin Lee ES-335.  I would imagine you could still order one without the stickers.

Wow what a childish, incoherent design. What the hell does “silence exile cummy” mean?
