daemonlibrian Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) Hi all— My first post here. I am very new to the Gibson world! I just bought a Standard 50s issue and I have a question about its finishing. When I bought it arrived and I could barely see any wood details on the flame top. Now, after 2 months, details are more visible but is started to pop up a unique oval shape on the top that I am not sure it’s a flaw or a normal detail of the wood. Is it looking normal? Thanks all, and happy new year! Edited January 1, 2021 by daemonlibrian Quote
Leonard McCoy Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 (edited) The figuring in the wood of the maple cap of your guitar looks beautiful. Far from a defect. Edited January 1, 2021 by Leonard McCoy 2 Quote
SteveFord Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 What the esteemed Leonard McCoy said, just details emerging over time. Quote
kidblast Posted January 1, 2021 Posted January 1, 2021 Leonard nails it, nothing wrong what so ever, that's nice lookin Paul you got there. Quote

The wood grain on the left looks like...what are guitars made out of... It slipped my mind. Someone will remember it. Nice axe, but they didn't match those peices very good on the maple cap. NighthawkChris Posted January 2, 2021 Posted January 2, 2021 (edited) Not worried at all about those “ovals”. The book matching could have been better pre-finish and one side “faded” a bit afterwards. And another thing is sometimes the flames on the LP tops hide on you in certain lighting, then you move it and “Oh, there it is!” Nice looking LP man, take care of it. Literally all my Custom Shop Gibson’s with flame tops have ovals on them, and boy they’re gorgeous 😁 Edited January 2, 2021 by NighthawkChris Quote
Eracer_Team Posted January 2, 2021 Posted January 2, 2021 not an 'overly' flamey top.. (right side looks more flame than left (aka top side of Low E) ) but looks real nice with that colour and wood grain. I'd say it's a keeper Quote
Dub-T-123 Posted January 2, 2021 Posted January 2, 2021 That behavior of the wood grain is called chatoyance. The nature of the grain pattern is such that it changes depending on the viewing angle Quote
01GT eibach Posted January 2, 2021 Posted January 2, 2021 This is just my personal opinion ... The heavily flamed guitars certainly look beautiful but they can be a little much. The mixture of "some" flame and some plain top looks nice and balanced, and not like an overt furniture project -- and, to me, are more reminiscent of those older Les Pauls. I really like the top of the OPs new guitar. Just an opinion, not a hater ... Quote

Here’s a pic of Kossoff’s original LP and then my 2020 R9. Aside from the obvious fading, they look to me like they could have been cut from the same piece of maple Quote
SteveFord Posted January 3, 2021 Posted January 3, 2021 I'll take yours, thank you. Do you need me to PM you my address? Quote

This pic is an example of the type of guitar finish that I was referring to in my mind's eye when I wrote the previous post, where it is not an over-the-top flametop. BTW, you have a beautiful guitar (I bet you never have heard that before ... LOL). This pic is a '59. 1 Quote
Sgt. Pepper Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 I owned this for a while it had some flame on it. I bought the body and neck and then bought all the parts and pieces and assembled it. 1 Quote
Ed Zeplin Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 (edited) I find that the flame on my 2004 standard can pop or disappear depending on the lighting and/or viewing angle. Nice one you have there Edited January 5, 2021 by Ed Zeplin Quote
