Original break

Sorry for your damage..

That break looks so clean, its almost like a scarf joint, Gibson does do them from time to time.. No telling what they could hide under an opaque finish..

Scarf joint on a new Epi 335. Note that Epiphone hasn't used them for quite while until now on certain 2020 models with the new headstock.

My new Epi 339's Scarf joint, well blended and hard to see, under the QC label and goes up the side at an angle like your break,

This is from Fenders site.

Fender U.S. made American Vintage series instruments are finished with nitrocellulose lacquer (Exception: '75 Jazz Bass is finished with polyurethane).

American, Korean and Chinese made Fender guitars are finished with polyurethane.

Mexican and Japanese-made Fender instrument bodies are finished with polyester while the necks are finished with polyurethane.

Fender Custom Shop Relic, Closet Classic, and N.O.S. series guitars use "Thin-Skin" nitrocellulose lacquer finishes.

Most other Custom Shop models use urethane; however, on a "one-off" order they may accommodate most finishing material requests. (Note: Finish specifications are subject to change without notice).

What finish does Epiphone use?
While Gibsons are finished with old-school nitrocellulose lacquer, Epiphone guitars are covered with more conventional polyester and polyurethane finishes.Aug 9, 2019

Yeah, but there are all kinds of stories of stolen guitars.  Jimmy Page's 'Black Beauty', Peter Frampton's famous '54 "Phenix",  Joe Perry had a '59 LP Standard stolen in the '70s that ended up with Slash in the '90s who after knowing it was Perry's still took 10 years to give it back to him, Jeff Beck's '60 LP standard purchased from (pre-Cheap Trick) Rick Nielsen in the late 1960s, Paul McCartney's first Hofner bass, Alex Lifeson had a bunch of guitars stolen from him, Metallica's Kirk Hammett has a '59 LP Standard that he never has leave his side he is so scared of it walking off, Aerosmith in the early '70s were using a theater as a rehearsal space and had every piece of their gear stolen including all Perry's early Marshalls along with a ton of guitars (separate from the aforementioned '59 LP Std), etc.  And these are just some of the more famous ones ... there are so many more.

Probably all of your Epiphones are finished in polyester and I’m not criticizing you for it

That break looks totally fixable from here

I agree 100%.

I would drill a fine pilot hole (beneath the truss rod cover) right thru both pieces, install a proper sized bolt, washer, and acorn nut, lay the glue in, insert &  tighten up the hardware, and then leave it clamped for a day or two.

Reinstall the truss rod cover, string it up, and rock and roll.

I thought about putting a screw through, like you said, but was worried where it would come out near the truss rod. It seems if I don't get it into a meaty part of the wood behind then it won't have much to hold.

My thinking is that the bolt head would be flush on the truss rod cover side.
That way you'd have no problem getting at the truss rod aperture.
And your truss rod cover would cover up that recessed bolt head.

The acorn nut with washer, on the other side, would be at least smooth, (won't snag your flesh like a screw head)  and it would rest in between the E string tuning gears, unobtrusively.

Warmoth has a couple options for nitrocellulose

Personally I would never use screws etc to fix the headstock. I had a friend who put a headstock back on an Ibanez with wood screws and gorilla glue and it held but was atrocious. As gdecant1 said you could glue the break back together then reinforce with a couple splines. Since the neck is already black with what looks like a clean break you have a good scenario for an invisible repair

It’s a job for a luthier but since the first luthier didn’t fix it correctly it seems like someone else should do it

That's terrible. Those guys should have stuck to playing the pubs & clubs I do.

I don't intend have them tested, so probably just safer to describe them as poly. I am just really glad they are not nitro.... 🙂

Gibson don't need to scarf joint.

Gibson does use Scarf Joints when they need to in production models like the Marauder below...

Also typical on a Gibson Grabber Bass..

My daughter took my JL  Epihone Revolution Casino to school to show her band teacher, and instead of putting back in the case right away she leaned it up against a chair and she accidently knocked it over and the headstock cracked.

$800 later for a profession fix and five years later no issues and you cant even tell it was ever cracked

John rolled over in his grave a little bit that day.

Gigging a crappy guitar is the new gigging a killer vintage guitar.

When I'm at home I only look at my D-41, it wasn't meant to be played. Its to fancy.

My favoriter bit from "This is Spinal Tap" is still:

Nigel: "Well, don't POINT, even - it can never be played, ever."

Interviewer: "Can I just see..."

Nigel: "No, you've seen enough of that one."

It's still got the old tagger on it.

I saw that movie as a sneak preview. Still one of the best Mockumentary's ever.

This February it'll be 51 years of me playing.

I've not known anyone lose a guitar at a gig either, but I known someone who lost his at a rehearsal. Good job he was insured.

When I play gigs, I hire one of my buddies for $100 to sit next to my equipment during the gig, and make sure my geetars are in tune.  If he has to use the bathroom he will let me know..... No drinking boo's of any kind. And finally help make sure all my equipment is packed into the Uhaul... Small fee to pay for reassurance
