Revelation
If you ever see the Gibson tour on YouTube the binding is a hand process that takes 2 months to learn and there is a certain wrap process that is done to get the best results. It's a skill and there is a lot of labor. The other way is just to cut the area where the binding will go ahead of time and just put a plastic binding in as explained in this video at 2:07. 7 Things That Do Not Make Guitars Expensive Anymore - YouTube Edited February 12, 2021 by Revelation
Rabs
Gibson tend to do stuff in the traditional way because thats just the way they do it neither way is better or worse really, it may take them two months to learn it but it doesnt take long to do it per guitar.. I have done binding before using super glue, its not that hard....
rickc
There's a massive difference between multiply binding and a single strip of plastic. If you delve deeper, you will see some guitar makers pre-shape binding using heat and then glued and simply taped in place; there must be a reason why Gibson still use the long, reusable tape method. Then there's the scraping.... SteveFord
That bike is a trip down memory lane, very nice. I suspect Rabs is right, they do it they way they do it because of tradition. Kind of like Ducati with desmodromic valve gear for all those years.
Leonard McCoy
That is Musicman's way of doing single-ply-only binding on the body. They use a special epoxy as binding material. I doubt anyone would adopt that technique. Probably also not easy to repair.
badbluesplayer
The guy in the video asks "Why wouldn't this new binding method be just as good as the old method?" I'd tell him " I guess you don't know, do you?!" Edited February 13, 2021 by badbluesplayer
