Gibson J 40 year identification

Recommended Posts

Hi. I'm trying to date my J 40. It's been in the family for ages but the serial number and made in usa stamp/ imprint is very faint now. I can only see 0093/8 on the headstock I can't really see any remnants of any other numbers. The story goes is that it was a prototype that had been given away to a relative who lived near the kalamazoo factory after some sort of fire had damaged a bunch of guitars sometime in the 60's or 70's. I don't know if they got it from the factory or some local guitar dealer, I think the story goes it came from the factory but the relatives involved have now since passed away. Does anyone else have one of these guitars with a similar serial or any info on how gibson numbered/ dated their J 40's, prototypes or regulars?
