NickyB123
Hello All, I’m trying to identify the model and age of an old Gibson of mine. I believe it’s an LG-2. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Been curious for years. Play it everyday but never looked into it. Serial number is either 346 or 846. Thanks! jedzep
You took that last photo from the wrong angle. If you shot inside the sound hole from the peg head side you'd see either a V shaped (X) brace just below, indicating an LG2, or a straight across ladder brace, for the LG1. NickyB123
Thank you for the response. On the back or top of guitar from the inside? If back, then it looks like LG1. Any ideas on identifying the year? Nick
NickyB123
Now that I look, the bracing on back is laddered and the bracing on top is X.
jedzep
Look just under the top under the bottom half of the soundhole to see the 'V' or straight brace. For fun you can look up the date (50's) by number here: http://www.guitarhq.com/gibson.html#serial
NickyB123
Got it, so it’s an LG2 or 3 apparently. I’ve read through the Gibson serial numbers sites and can’t seem to find a 3 digit serial number without a letter. Really appreciate the guidance! NickyB123
Ok, so LG2, it is! Possibly a 1946 but still trying to figure out the 3 digit serial number.
jedzep
Could be right. Congrats on it being Xbraced. Sturdy little beasts. Loved mine when I had them. I think '46 was the last year for the banner logo, but I think I see the dot over the I touches the G on the logo, so you're in that short range from '47 to '51 or so. NickyB123
Got it - were getting there. Thanks again!
j45nick
With those tuners, earlier rather than later. Because of the block logo, I would says maybe 1947 or 1948, no earlier. The serial number (actually the factory order number) is a bit anomalous, but three digits were used early in 1947. My semi-educated guess is early 1947. Looks to be in very nice condition, by the way. And welcome to the forum, one Nick to another.

JTM
If your headstock is tapered it can't be newer than 1952.
