Rest In Peace, BJ Thomas.

He had a great voice and a great string of hits, crossing the country, rock,  gospel, and pop lines, always with a little of the blues mixed in.

First song of his that I remember is ‘I’m so Lonesome I Could Cry ‘ which introduced a new generation of rock and roll kids to the song writings of Hank Williams.

Here’s a classic BJ Thomas song, “Rock and Roll Lullaby” from 1972.   Besides BJ Thomas’ vocal, check out Duane Eddy briefly coming back into the hit limelight by playing his signature twang guitar licks in the song, plus, a cool Beach Boys-like harmony that appears towards the end in the song (though it’s not The Beach Boys).

Exactly!  That’s pretty much what did it for me.  I’d heard of Hank, but hadn’t paid much notice with The British Invasion and Beach Boys, etc.  >.........  BJ Thomas had his demons and he fought them well.  Like many of his contemporaries in music, he paid the price that wealth and fame can demand.  RIP!

A few years ago I saw BJ on TV talking about his dad who was a huge Ernest Tubb fan. When BJ was teamed up with ET in the studio, he took his dad along to meet him.
