Randy99CL
Just bought a new SG Tribute Raven from GC that has the maple neck and Grover cast body tuners. Neck dive is pretty bad, I can tolerate it but have replaced those Grover tuners on other guitars and know that they are surprisingly heavy. I'm wondering if anyone has compared the weight of different sets of tuning machines? For example, I would guess that the vintage Gibson/Klusons (with plastic buttons) would be much lighter than the all-metal designs. And then whether it would be worth swapping them to save a little weight? This isn't life or death, just wondering.
merciful-evans
The Kluson types are lighter, but it might not make enough difference. Try this before you buy: Remove the tuners and re-check the guitar for neck dive. It will give you some idea of where you are starting from. The general advice about neck dive is to use a strap with a suede underside. It wont slip.
SG Sydney
If the cavity lid cover on the back of the guitar was made from " heavy metal" ( excuse the pun) instead of plastic it would balance out the guitar and get no neck dive at all.....try it out for your self.....Blu tack some metal weights on the cavity cover.....but as soon as you pick it up it's heavy like a Les Paul......so it is what it is .....the beauty of the SG Gibson is it's nice and light.....I use a 3 inch quality leather strap and neck dive won't exist. Eracer_Team
Thin body heavy headstock causes the neck dive Not a .001 of an ounce in tuners
mihcmac
Best way to control neck dive is to use an old style real leather strap, extra wide leather Bass straps work the best..
badbluesplayer
I think the difference between regular Grovers and the vintage style tuners is about 3 ounces. I think StewMac has that info listed for each type of tuner. Edit - I just checked - the 135 series vintage tuners are 2.9 ounces lighter than the 102 series regular style tuners. Bad Blues Do you think that that's enough weight loss to stop SG neck dive?? Edited December 12, 2021 by Eracer_Team

Three ounces on the headstock is probably about the same as say 9 to 12 ounces hanging off the rear strap button, since the distance from the center point between the strap buttons to the headstock is probably about 3 to 4 times the distance from the center back to the rear strap button. I'll surely help substantially.
