Cleaning my jimmy page custom w/bigsby

Hi, just got my JPC and its a beauty alright. I'm wondering what cleaning products to use since it has the nitrocellulose finish. The booklet with the guitar mentions Luthiers Choice. Looking at Gibson products on the Gibson website I see 2 options. Theres the Luthiers Choice range (AIGLC-970), but theres also the Vintage reissue guitar restoration kit (AIGG-RK1).

Which one of these cleaning ranges would you recommend? Is there much difference between them? How often ideally should I use the Guitar polish since the finish on the JPC is slightly dull, I don't want to make it over glossy or anything. This is my first guitar to have this Nitro finish so maybe I am being over cautious with it, but it cost me enough so I want to be really sure!

Thanks,

Chengin

Thanks for that.

Light dusting is fine, but what about accumalation of sweat or smudges over time fom handling which will affect the finish. Should I just continue to rub with the cloth and let the finish age over time.

I guess over time the finish is going to start wearing a bit. Is there any way in this case that I can protect it. If so what would you recommend I use?

Just wondering about the pros and cons of both types of gibson polishes. Is the booklet that came with the VOS just a generic booklet or is it any way specific to this VOS? In other words, should I ignore the products mentioned in it?

Thanks for your help,

Chengin

Right, it would be nice if there were some sort of mild care kit included or AT THE LEAST some instruction sheet slipped into the envelope - that would cost about 5 cents for a photocopy.

Yeah Nitro finishes are touchy. I marred a nitro finish on a Martin HD-28 about 10 years ago by leaving the guitar strap on it while putting it in its case. Next time I openned the case the back had a dull mark on it from where the strap contacted the body. Some may disagree with this but I have successfully used a clean cloth that was lightly sprayed with Windex (the original blue one) to get the oils and prints off without harming the finish. Its great for getting the oils off of strings too.

Hi, thanks for the replys. I got this a while back from Gibson support, it may be of some use to someone (haven't tried it yet though!)

Luthier’s Choice and Gibson pump polish is specially formulated to work with nitrocellulose lacquer and will not hurt the finish. Be advised however that these polishes will shine the guitar removing the VOS effect. If you want to keep that used look we recommend wiping it with a dry cotton cloth with as little buffing as possible. Thank you for the inquiry.

Hope this is of some use to someone. They also replied that the polish would be ok to use, particularily on the neck. I guess because its not as visible.

The Gibson Luthier's Choise works great with my Standard (see my avitar), keeps it very shiny. I just picked up an R7 VOS yesterday from my local GC, and my salesguy just dusted it off, only because the store is back-ordered on the polish. He advised me when I get it home I should put a coat of polish on the body and fret board. He told me not to rub too much on the hardware since it is a VOS, and the finish will begin to shine. Other than that he did not advise against using the polish. Wipe after daily use, and a good polish with the Gibson polish about once a month.

Polish on the fretboard? I don't think that sounds right. Only oil on the fretboard.

Yes, the VOS finish on the neck of my JP was gone after about 10 hours of play.

The Gibson Luthier's Choice made the back of the neck of my JP #1 very squeaky. I have since returned to using carnuba wax - much better in my experience.
