Murph
I wonder if anybody has ever done a "side by side" comparison of the difference in the early 60's color, and the ones available now? And why this came to be? I mean, it must be about sales, eh? I actually prefer the deeper red, which is one reason (bevel/tapers) I haven't bought a new SG. I bought my ES-339 last year, and my daughters '08 Fireburst Studio Lester, and need to spend a few grand this year on music gear, (taxes). Which leads me to another topic. Murph. Demoryn
I have a 2006 SG, and the finish is pretty deep, which is what I wanted. Honestly, I would like it if it were a little deeper, but it's better than the new Standards. They're starting to look more orange than red
jimmiJAMM
Same here. My 2007 (<— see avitar ) is pretty dark too.
TinFish
My 61' RI is just as dark as that 67' and it looks great which is why I bought it. I have seen the lighter colored ones in guitar shops though and I agree they don't look so hot.

Dub-T-123
The new color looks pretty bad in high light but in medium-low light I'd say it's much better looking. It's tough to get a good photo of the color like that. But when you see it it's quite nice. But I do dislike it in really high light
gnolivos
Yeah, the newer SG Standards are orange all the way... I absolutely HATE them. I ended up getting a 2004, which is somewhat darker than the current SGs... still not as dark as I'd like it to be. I do have an Epi SG (1966 re-issue) and it is a looker... deep wine red. Gorgeous. hbomb76
It's funny, because my local GC has a matching pair of a late 60's Junior and Special, and my buddy and I went in there last week and he even said the new '61 and Standard beneath them looked "sickly" by comparison because they aren't REALLY "cherry" at all, more of a burnt-sienna color. It's sad. MY advice is to complain and do so often, maybe Gibson will fix the color (and HOPEFULLY some of the other issues). H-Bomb

gnolivos
I called Gibson customer service a few months back about this exact issue, and they played DUMB! Like they had no idea what I was referring to. Whatever. Gibson CS has been terrible for me.
Murph
And we can hold onto our money until said corrections are made as well. H-Bomb That's just what I'm doing. My oldest son gets my '79, because he gave me back my '61 Melody Maker I gave him when he was 16. It's a trade thing, and as soon as he gets settled (he works contruction on the road) he gets it. I've been bouncing back and forth on a new Standard (SG), a '61 RI, or another ES339. I really like an SG in my arsonal, so I'm ..... "ON THE FENCE" WITH MONEY, GIBSON..................... Murph.
