rocketman Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 My Gibson Sonex-180 Custom is my best guitar for staying in tune. It may not be the best sounding (great for shredding tones but lousy for blues tones), but it's built like a beast. I was on travel and didn't get to play it for several weeks. When I pulled it out the tuning was dead on and after two hours of playing it, the tuning didn't budge. So, just for curiosity sake, what's your best guitar in terms of staying in tune?
FirstMeasure Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 My Gibson Nighthawk It can take big bends, and it'll be in the case a couple days and come out in tune.
rocketman Posted April 7, 2009 Author Posted April 7, 2009 Interesting. I use the same exact strings on all the Gibsons, wind them up like The Mick does, use approximately the same setup on all, but the Sonex definitely holds its tuning better than the LPs. I'm not saying the LPs are bad; they do stay in tune after two hours of practicing. But I do notice that the LPs lose their tuning more than the Sonex when I don't play them often (I know, I know...play them all the time!).
FirstMeasure Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Yeah, it's not hat I have trouble with my other guitars going out of tune, It's just that my Nighthawk stays in tune for days and days.
The Mick Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 I had an SG that would go out of tune somewhat easy. I sold it I had a Strat that would go out of tune somewhat easy. I sold it I had a LP Studio that would go out of tune somewhat easy. I sold it
surfpup Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 It always seems that the ones I am not playing stay in tune the best! :(
Murph Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 My '79 SG is as stable as a block of concrete. The ES-339 is semi hollow, so temps, ect are more a factor. The SG can travel hundreds of miles, hot, cold, ect, yank it out of the case and gig it. The Walnut might be a factor, I don't know. Good topic. Murph.
Californiaman Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 I never have any problems with my ES 175 or my Telecaster going out of tune.
Thundergod Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Fender Telecaster American Ash 60 ann. Really stays in tune the best... It's guitar perfection. After that one, the les paul... I have yet to find any of those famous tuning issues.
Jesus Is Dead In My Basement Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 I never had a problem with Tuning, But if i had to pick one it would have to be my Stratocaster i havn't had to tune that bad boy since i bought it and thats was in 92.
Thundergod Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Have you guys noticed how you can drop a made in the US fender from the top of a building and it will be playable when you retrieve it?

Twelvebar Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Have you guys noticed how you can drop a made in the US fender from the top of a building and it will be playable when you retrieve it?My Ibanez fell out of one of those storage box things, on top of the van at highway speeds. The case exploded and the guitar flew into a snowbank in the ditch.Couldn't find the knobs, the cavity covers were gone, and the body got all scarred up. But structurally it was unharmed. I replaced the strings, and had to adjust the intonation, but the neck was still perfectly seated, and didn't need a trussrod adjustment. Most indestructible guitar ever.

If you haven't tuned since 92 it's not a guitar it's art!
djroge1 Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 The one that stays in tune for the longest time is probably my Epiphone Elitist Dot. I have seen my 78 Les Paul which was faced against the amp fall, in slow motion mind you, onto a concrete floor thanks to our drummer needing to move the amp. No damage at all - I attribute that in part to a rock solid maple neck.
RichCI Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 All of mine stay in tune pretty well; my Strat and Les Paul hold the best, the Strat might be a little better but not by much.
Twelvebar Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 I find that any of my guitars, once I properly set them up, stay in tune.

milod Posted April 8, 2009 Posted April 8, 2009 Best staying in tune? Gotta be my Guild S-100SC - that's the sorta SG clone for a Guild with the acorns and oak leaves carved into the mahogany solidbody. Not my favorite guitar 'cuz I don't care that much any more for board guitars. But it's solid. For a board it sounds fine. I bought it new in the 1970s. Wanted an LP or SG but no Gibsons for miles and miles and miles. Didn't care for Fenders except for the amps. The hollow and semi-hollow boxes don't hold tune as well because of sensitivity to weather, as has been stated before. But I guess I still prefer them in general because of a bit better depth of tone - although an LP or SG type can do quite nicely through a decent amp and modern electronics seem to be able to make about any guitar sound like something it ain't.
daveinspain Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I don't have any tuning issues with any of my guitars... First off they are all good guitars and second I live in a very stable climate...
