Ulhuru
Hi, Well issues, appearing with RIP. String signal separation when using RIP & 6 separate strings is pretty poor, around 20 dB?? This renders the whole concept pretty much useless, try to put a delay on the low E channel, the high e will trigger that delay... ... And the latency, I got crackles at around 200 samples ( 20ms I/O) in Live8, whereas I can go twice as low with Motu Traveller and same live project. Thanks for your insight(s) on the subject,
Rockin365
Sorry to hear of your findings Ulhuru, this certainly puts a dampener on previous news that the dark fire will be shipping again soon. Wonder if this issue is going to cause any further delays. Reading these forums while waiting is like being on a dark fire rollercoaster that could de-rail ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)
Ulhuru
As I understand it, a hardware improvement is in the pipeline, and might officially be announced, soon. It could therefore adress most of the (known) issues listed in this forum. And all in time for shipping the 3800 DF waiting... Particularly if the current (automotive) hardware combination shown here has been seriously revisited: http://forums.gibson.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&t=12665 Theoretically, the channel separation could perhaps be part of that fix, if it is due to an analog multiplexing "problem". (If this is inherent to 6x piezo cross-talking to each other, then I just don't know if there is a solution) Regarding the latency, this is something that would eventually be improved by a new driver version by Echo. I must say, I just bought a Raleigh electric bike today, same price range as DF, new technology too. And while obviously intended use is slightly different :-), everything worked very straightforwardly and smoothly right out of the box. No service, no RMA; no driver update needed.... So I am still a little baffled by how Gibson is addressing the production, service & communication around Dark Fire, particularly when knowing that this project is so important to Henry. PS: And I am getting more puzzled by the "all analog" route that has been taken on the DF side, as to me this has lead into awkward choices hardware wise (see above). Going digital* would/will not be as "pure", granted, but you can multiplex / EQ / matrix audio quite efficiently in the digital world, with far fewer artifacts than with current options. I am curious to see how well Rev2 will behave. ... If I wait that far with a currently not so usable guitar... *As Fender does
DiscoPimp
wow .. more bad news ... that doesn't sound too good for what i intended to use the DF also for: MIDI guitar ... with poor channel separation of the piezos that's probably not going to work out so good

Do we get a retrofit for the upgraded hardware?
Ulhuru
For upgrade, probably yes, unless a simple firmware update can fix the issues. For channel separation, I don't know, maybe that's how it is with 6 piezos on the bridge, even on other guitars. Just I have never heard one of those connected direct in Live with 13pin (and adapter). So far I have used my Brian Moore 13pin with VG-99 and it does work OK, even for midi. But what puzzles me with DF is poor channel separation of widely separated strings, E to e, for example. (Maybe an issue with bridge itself??) elantric
Piezo Tune-o-matic bridges always suffer crosstalk - regardless of vendor (RMC, LR Baggs, Graphtech Ghost, Tronical) The Roland / Axon / Yamaha Guitar to MIDI systems all have String Sensitivity adjustment - and an ideal signal to noise / crosstalk range can be established with the Dark Fire. I have tested a prototype RIP to GK13 cable, and used the Dark Fire with RIP to drive the Roland VG-99 - it worked very well.
