Resell value of Gibsons

brad1

Recommended Posts

It's nothing new that the prices of guitars on Reverb and other places are very high from what they originally cost. And Gibsons probably have the highest markup.

I bought an 2014 SGJ in 2014, for $480.  It was at the end of the year and they had lowered the price somwhat. I now see this exact same guitar going for $700-$1000 dollars on Reverb.

And I bought a Les Paul Studio in 2016 for $650. I see them all the time on Reverb for $800-$1400.

It just irritates me that so many people try to rip so many people off.  And yes, I know it's not new. But it just seems to be so bad nowadays.

I'm  really glad I bought those guitars new when I did.

Because I couldn't afford to buy them used today![smile]

Interesting because in the UK we are about to go into a recession and as there are so many guitars up for sale, it's becoming a buyers market.  But yeah, everything has gone up steeply in the last 3 years.

Of course it depends on what the guitar is.  I like archtops but they don't go up in value so much.  I recently saw online a 2000 Gibson L-4CES up for £3k(GBP).   That's a pretty good price over here.

Yeah, I see what you're seeing too - especially with Gibsons.  It seems like nearly ANYTHING you want to buy today has a price hike...  Irritating, yes.  What is the reason for this mess, can't say for sure...

Greed, Covid, Capitalism, and cause Gibson’s name is on it.

Recently, I’ve been paying $5.00 - $6.00 for Gas! I remember paying 19 Cents a Gallon!

Markets change.. My first Gibson Les Paul was purchased Used for about $70.00 in 1969.. It was a lot of money to me back then.. It’s all relative to current monetary values…

My Martin D-35 cost about $500.00 brand new in 1976… A fortune to me at that time!

I recently bought a new USA Epiphone Casino for $3000.00! A fortune to me now!

Times change.. The value of the Dollar is always in a State of flux.

Unfortunately, like everything else, the cost of Guitars changes too….

we're seeing the same Brad,  My son has been looking at selling a quilt top'd Korean mean Epi Les Paul Standard .

Ones just  like his when checked completed listed, are going for  $700/$800 which is more than they cost new back when they were purchased.

Some of that upping of price is the Korean origin, somehow, those have become more sought after than the MIC/or other asian sourced models.

Don't like INFLATION?   Caused by printing and distributing trillions of 'fake' money? (like counterfeiters do - but they're a cottage industry compared to the US Treasury) ?

Then try SHRINKFLATI0N:  Kellogs keeps their prices the same to compete with General Mills, but puts less cereal in the box.

So - can't afford a guitar ?   buy a ukulele.     Because, on top of handing out trillions of dollars -  when prices drivers like gas and food and housing are made to go up - and you mix in the final ingredient:  "Supply and Demand" -   No child will be left behind.  Prices of everything will go up,  even  foreign made LP's.

I wish I could buy petrol that cheap, it's over £1.80 a Litre in the UK.

I drive a Full Size Chevy Crew Cab Silverado Pickup… Which gets about 15 MPG…. $5.00 - $6.00 a Gallon.. That gets expensive..

What do you drive?

I made a choice a while back to get the Ram with the Hemi or the V6. Got the V6 and haven’t regretted it. I had the Hemi for a couple trucks and it does giddy up haha! But MPG was awful of course… the V6 gets me close to 22-23 which is stellar for a full size pickup. I don’t do major towing so this has done me very nicely. Have to have a truck though… super useful!

You sure about that price?  I just filled up my '05 Chevy equinox at $3.89 a gallon.

And I noticed most of those guitar prices mentioned were from Reverb.  Can't really blame Gibson for Reverb's price gouge.  And really, the resell value of anything is whatever people are willing to pay.

Damn good price.  Grinnell Brothers in Lincoln Park, MI (a Michigan music store chain)  was selling that Martin and also the D-28 for $500.00 brand new in 1967!  That's where me and my buddy Chuck would go in and take Martins, Gibson Hummingbirds and Stromberg archtop acoustics down off the spice rack and pick at them mesmerized by the heady tones.  The fact that he and I were the only "punks" that came in and handled each guitar like they were made of nitroglycerin was why old Scottie, the manager, let us be the only kids to handle the merchandise.

I drive a Mini Cooper and a Morgan LeMans 62.  The Morgan does 40+ MPG, the Mini does roughly 25, which isn't particularly good for a small car.

Yeah, I’m sure of the Price of Gas where I live.. LOL! I live in Palm Springs, Ca…. I have 3 Vehicles.. My Truck, an ‘05 Corvette & my wife’s ‘22 Lexus ES350..

As for my 1975 Martin D-35 I bought for $500.00 new in 1976… I worked in Jody Reynolds Music Store in Palm Springs.. I got it for about Cost..

The Price gouge isn’t Reverb, it’s the Owners of the Instruments who set the Price… Regardless of what people think, fair market value is determined by what someone is willing to pay… If nobody paid the high Prices, nothing would sell. When things don’t sell they’re incentivized, discounted or both… Then Prices go down… Or the Products are discontinued and or removed from the Market…

So in essence more than twice the MPG as me.. Which, for you, should be a reduction in overall Petrol expenditure…

Not it isn't but then again when Etsy acquired Reverb. their fees went up, so in a way it is Reverb a bit cause they are now taking more of our cut of the final price. Now with fees, shipping, and taxes ect to sell gear for what you want to really get for it, you need to increase the price.

Yeah, true, but everybody’s fees have gone up! That’s the market today! Like it or not.. Sellers have the choice to charge what they want.. They have the choice to sell elsewhere too.. Reverb is a business.. They’re in it for the money… It’s just business.. Sad, but it’s reality today…

Not really familiar with Reverb and how they operate.  I thought it was some kind of retail outlet.  But if owners set the price,  it sounds as if it might be some kind of Craig's list type of thing.

I guess because with the exception of books, CDs or DVDs I don't do much online buying.  And I certainly wouldn't buy anything as expensive as a guitar or as large as furniture or appliances online and hope they don't go through too many butterfingered  Amazon, FedEx or UPS dolts before it finally gets to me.

Reverb is like ebay.  Don't bother looking into it.  Leave the good stguff for the rest of us, lol.

Selling is a chore now. I have a guitar (000-18) for sale on Reverb to fund another one I want. Its at a great price with free shipping. I had one guy contact me, and he wanted me to take all kinds of caliper readings at different points on the guitar. I told him I only have one of those credit card size, set up measuring tools, from Stew Mac. Another guy from New Zealand got a hold of me, but didn't look all the way down at the bottom of the page to see I will only ship in the US. I told him I would sell him the guitar if he paid full shipping to NZ. Crickets after that. One guy said he was going to drive to Little River, SC  from Atlanta to see the guitar, and of course, he bought a different one, and never showed up. One guy was very particular about how the top of his guitar looked. He wanted more pics to see if the ones posted were just wood anomalies or tricks of the light. Once he got more pics he did not like the natural anomalies in the wood. Um this was made from a once living tree, and no two tops are the same. That is makes them interesting. It even comes with one of those hard TLK cases people like. I like the thermoplastic ones. One, they are lighter, and two, stickers stick better on them. I may try to sell my D-15M too. That will be fun too. So far no one has made me an offer for the guitar. Usually I get at least one or two low ball offers per week, but mostly nothing.

I want to bypass the whole hassle!!! Wait til you read what's happening with Fed Ex!!

I'm trying to set up an arrangement with the Owner & Friend of a fairly large Guitar & Amp Repair Shop in my Area where I can advertise on Craigslist & the interested Party can meet me by appointment at the Shop.. If they like it hand me Cash & Adios!! If not no big Deal...

I'm curious. Why would the shop owner be willing to do this? Are you giving him any kind of incentive?

I’ve known him for several years, he’s a good friend. He does all my work & I refer him everyone I know.. Yes, I will pay him a fee… I’d have to pay Reverb, EBay etc..

This will be a whole lot easier.. I’ll show by Appointment.. Customer can try out & inspect.. They can Buy & pay Cash, or don’t.. No Websites, Shipping, Boxing & all the other hassle…

Not to mention those guys who want to return & get full refunds.. Warranted or not… I’d rather avoid that altogether with face to face dealings….

That sounds like a good deal to me. Win-Win for both of you without all those hassels you mentioned. I wish I could do that![thumbup]

Got contacted yesterday by two potential buyers. One wants it, and said he will have the funds next Friday (never heard that before), and asked if I will hold it for him until then. Yes I will, but if someone buys it, then I won't.

One guy wanted more pics of every ding, and nick, and scratch photographed. He even wanted me to try to get pics of the surface scratches on the back. I tried to get pics, but the guitar reflects back too much do to the gloss finish.
