harmonicchaos Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I'm probably going to be getting a vintage Ampeg V4 100w bass/guitar amp soon. I never thought that I'd ever get a half stack, let alone a 100 watter! But I'm absolutely in love with this amp and It's amazing for bass as well which is very important for me. So I'm looking into a 4x12 cabinet. I like the Marshall's I've tried but I thought I'd get some 2nd opinions. I'm looking for something that works well for bass especially, due to my alt tunings and bass usage. Just figured I'd ask. The more economically priced, the better. I'm not even going to be able to afford the cabinet until I get a job this summer or Christmas money etc. so no rush right now but I just wanted to start researching it. Thanks. Oh yeah, and hey. I haven't been on in a while. I'm still alive, just doing other stuff lately.
myspace.com/jessenoah Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 there is something magic about a "cheap" marshall 1960 cab the GT75 speakers really do it for me, they are kinda dark sounding compared to the V30s, but i play with alot of treble, so it balences everything out right, i know that there are some guys using 13ply birch, and mesa's oversized cabs are supposed to have better bass "snap" to em, but for what i do, marshalls look the coolest, and they really have a warm sound that i dont find with mesa/avator/randel..........ect
Murph Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 I played a 1960A for about 8/9 years. I'm not a fan. Crappy wheels, crappy joints. I'm gonna say................. Mesa. Go figure. Murph.
myspace.com/jessenoah Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 i knew that was coming, the wheels on mine suck too! not sure what you mean buy the joints though
deepblue Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 My Orange 4x12 is well built and the workmanship was flawless. I cant say enough good things about Orange.
tuckomf Posted April 9, 2009 Posted April 9, 2009 The Laney cab in my picture is the size of a 4x12 , but it's actually a 2x12 with Celestion GT75's. Like Jesse said, they have a bottom end that's really pleasing to my ears, and the extra breathing room in the cab makes it really punchy for chicken pickin' and such. If you can find one, it's definitely worth checking out - oh, and it's a lot lighter than a 4x12 too.
:oilpit: Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Orange makes some KILLER cabs, not sure why, but everyone loves them I'm a sucker for greenbacks, so I'm pretty much happy with any greenback loaded cab
Steven Tari Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 All I can tell you is all I know Peavey. My 4-12 cab is all I use for my guitar amp. I have a transtube head and it makes me very happy. You can't see the whole 4-12 cab. Its the one behind the 2-12 cab that I use for my Keyboards.

Never let me down once. Then.....they were stolen! (
L5Larry Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I'm probably going to be getting a vintage Ampeg V4 100w bass/guitar amp soon. So I'm looking into a 4x12 cabinet. If it were me, I'd find a matching vintage Ampeg 4x12 cabinet. Nothing would look cooler than that old V4 sitiing on top of a period correct Ampeg cab. As an independent company, and even after Magnavox bought them in the seventies, Ampeg built exceptional quality equipment. Their SVT amp and cabinet of that era is still the benchmark by which ALL bass amps are measured today. Ampeg also made V4-B (bass) versions of the amps and cabinets. A speaker cabinet is just a wooden box, you can always the change out the speakers to suit your specific taste or needs. In fact many of the older cabs I see for sale are empty anyway, and 12" musical instrument speakers are readily available and relatively inexpensive.
Thundergod Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 I played a 1960A for about 8/9 years. I'm not a fan. Crappy wheels' date=' crappy joints.[/quote'] I'm with you murph...
myspace.com/jessenoah Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 ok, the 1960 cabs suck but i still like thoose speakers :)
deepblue Posted April 11, 2009 Posted April 11, 2009 Great point, but on the flip side a 4X12 is almost always a serious over kill as is 100 watts for 99% of the gigs I played. But it looks so cool on stage No truer words have been said in this forum. Its like owning a Ferrari and living in the big city. Sure, it looks cool but youll never push the car anywhere near its full potential.....not even close.
harmonicchaos Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 Great point' date=' but on the flip side a 4X12 is almost always a serious over kill as is 100 watts for 99% of the gigs I played. But it looks so cool on stage.[/quote'] Yeah, I know. I even said in my original post that I never thought I'd ever really get a half stack, let along a 4x12 100 watt one. I used to be a 30 watt combo person. I love the sound this amp has at really low volumes even though. Which is all I'll be using for a while. It's not overkill for bass guitar though... which is one of my reasons for going all out. yeah, and it does look cool... not that that matters to me though. I'd be fine with a shitty looking little combo if it sounded good. And it doesn't hurt that these amps go for great prices. Cheaper than most 30 watt combos! If I can get a 100 watt half stack I'm in love with cheaper than a 30 watt combo I like, I'm going to go with the half stack I can also play bass through!
harmonicchaos Posted April 11, 2009 Author Posted April 11, 2009 hey, maybe I should make the cab! That way I can choose my speakers etc. as well. Anyone have any estimates on how much it would cost to do, and how I would do it? I know you've done it thunder. Oh yeah, and Thunder how much would you charge to build a cab? I just thought I'd get a in-the-ballpark price. thanks!
Riffster Posted April 14, 2009 Posted April 14, 2009 You can find a lot of options in sizes and finishes from Avatar Cabinets. The brand Lopo makes good cabinets as well. They both sell loaded and empty cabinets, Avatar sells Celestion Speakers under the brand Hellatone. An option to the 4X12 you should consider is a 2X12 vertical and slanted. It is a very happy medium and not overkill like a 4x12. You get the fullness of a 2x12 and the sound projection is great having one speaker facing straight and the other inclined. http://www.lopoline.com/2x12verticalslant.html
