Silenced Fred
Hi, before I had pretty much decided on getting a LP Studio but have recently been playing on an SG Special at various shops and like them both a lot. I am looking for feedback on which one to buy since I only have the money to buy one or the other. I play mainly classic rock and some newer rock and alternative if that helps out. Tim Plains
They're both rock guitars. What you should do is spend an hour or so in a music store and just play them side by side. Buy the one you like more.

Silenced Fred
i am looking for influence with personal experiences with both models as I am currently a high school student and a grand is a considerable amount of money for me to drop on one thing and am looking for guidance. I agree with you, I kind've like the tone a little better as it is considerably richer and fuller than the SG. Also, I just went on Guitar Center's website and they have a 15% sale going on now thru Easter and may help me out a bit if I can get my parents on board with it =)

frankafru
its becoming tiring to have so many people say "only you can decide." well screw that, thats why he's asking, he likes them both. well if you're wanting to play alternative as well, the les paul should be your weapon of choice. the sg would be more of a hard rock guitar, which would be your choice if you are gonna scarcely play alternative
Silenced Fred
thanks for the advice frankafru. since im new here i dont want to step on any toes but yeah, the "your decision" stuff does get kind've irritating when you are looking for advice. Yeah i play some newer Alternative/Rock stuff but i also play like Led Zeppelin and the sort. That's what kind of has me more leaning towards the LP because of its versatility that you see it in everything. Thank you so much for all the feedback. Notes_Norton
Personally, I like the SG better. Lighter weight, great high fret access, IMHO better looks. It is a bit neck heavy though so if that bugs you it is something to consider. Notes
Silenced Fred
Thanks for all the feedback. I do like the SG due to the access to frets and the lightweight, however, I just love the sound and tone of the Les Paul.
surfpup
Tip - since you are playing them in shops, make sure you play them both standing with a strap and not just sitting down. I don't like SG style guitars when standing because of the location of the strap pin. Just something to consider in your purchase decision. heymisterk
Unless you play metal, you owe it to yourself to play a SG Classic with the P-90s. You can find one used for well under a grand on ebay.

KSG_Standard
I have both LPs and SGs, they are all great guitars. The LP is fancier, heavier and more beautiful to behold. The SG is lighter, has better upper fret access and is pretty in it's own way. I think that you can play ANY kind of music on either one and people have played ALL kinds of music on them both. It's going to come down to which you can afford and which one "speaks" to you. Shop around as much as you can and don't be in a hurry, try as many as you can, they are each different. My .02[/quote'] Good advice from KSG and others here. Personally, I don't like the SG at all, but that is my opinion. I think one thing you need to consider is the Les Paul is going to weigh a lot more. If you have a small build and plan on standing with it for a long time it will become tiresome. I got my LP while in 9th grade (back in 1979) and it wasn't a problem at all - I used to stand for hours without a problem. Now that I'm 43 it begins to get heavy. Having said that, I would still get the Les Paul because you're young and by the time you're my age you perhaps you will have the sg too.
TinFish
I like SG's. I've had a Special for about ten years and it has been a great guitar. That being said I am now selling it to get a Standard or a Les Paul. ... that wasn't much help :D
Silenced Fred
Thanks for all the great advice guys! I literally spent about three hours in my Sam Ash and decided on the LP after much thought and consideration. It's the Studio with the Faded Cherry finish and it plays amazing. I just like the tone of it better than the SG, for now. I plan on saving up and probably getting an SG as soon as I can, hopefully over the summer. I love it and am very proud to be a Gibson owner now. Thanks again for all the help that everyone has conributed
