Any rugby fans out there?

I've never even seen a Rugby game. Cricket either for that matter.

Even the American sports don't make me switch channels anymore. Yeah, I will watch the Superbowl, but that's about it. I was once an avid fan of Indiana University basketball, track and field, pro football, NASCAR, and Indy Racing League. As I get older I really don't care for any of it. I am a dull boy.

I'd scarcely qualify as a fan, as my understanding of the game and knowledge of the teams and leagues is abysmal. But I do love watching the game and trying to figure out what the hell all those fellers are up to. Sometimes we can get it on our satellite, other times it's blocked. I have no idea why they'd block rugby in Oregon. ;)

I've seen a few snippets of American Football a couple of times, but never a whole match.

Is it true the matches last 3.5 hours?

They're called games, not matches. Yeah, pro games can last that long, but there is a 15 or 20 min. half time break.

It's not that they actually play for that long. The clock stops between plays if a pass is incomplete or the ball carrier goes out of bounds.

It does take a lot of watching to figure out all of the rules, but isn't that the same with American Football? Stop, start, stop, start, start, stop. Second quater. Start, stop, start, stop ;)

and how many players on one team per game?

There are 22 in a rugby squad with 15 starters.

In football (soccer) there are sqauds of 18 with 11 starters.

LOL! Yeah, pretty much, although I think rugby moves faster. In our football, if a pass is incomplete (not caught by anyone) the ball is dead and play is over. Then everyone mills around for another 30 seconds before starting another play. I don't notice that much non-playing in rugby, seems the ball is considered "live" more of the time and there's less time between plays.

I gotta admit, I love the guys in the white coats in the end zone when a goal is scored. ;)

And don't the refs have those yellow or red flags with heavy bits that they that chuck around left, right and centre?

Yep, they're refs or line-judges or back-judges, field-judges, umpires. There are 7 of them on the field in NFL games. The flags indicate different things such as penalties, spot of down, fumble or punt catch...not sure what else. The color varies with the call with yellow being penalties.

I played Rugby in college. 2nd row for Tennessee Tech. Was invited to play for the US Rugby 7s team in Australia at one point, even. Don't get to see much of it here, though.

2nd coolest sport I ever played, with the SCA medieval combat being first.
