The Mick
If you like the guitar than it's worth it .
Homz
If I had an old strat copy I would "shave it's *** and make it walk backwards".
Homz
Seriously, buy a cheep strat copy and put the David Gilmore active PUP set in it. That's an awesome sound. I don't think they will fit in yours though, because of the humbucker bridge spot.

ksdaddy
I agee with The Mick but I would ask you why you think it 'needs' new pickups.... are you just not happy with the tone? Personally (and I am often maligned for this position but will state it anyway) I belive if you're going to change pickups you might as well go balls-out over the top. My '71 LP Deluxe had flaccid, wimpy stock mini humbuckers and I put Dimarzio DLXs in it. It just about blows the amp up. I built a headless travel guitar about 1996 and had many different humbuckers in it. Finally I said 'screw it' and put in a Dimarzio X2N. If it ceases to function as a pickup I can tow it behind the boat to troll for scrap metal in the river. A few years ago I had a '79 Strat and spend hundreds of dollars installing pickup sets; Lace Sensors, Texas Specials, Duncan something-or-others... I wasn't happy until I put in Dimarzios. I don't recall the models but they were over the top. I know I seem to preach Dimarzio and that's not my intention but they just seem to provide pickups that will rip sh1t and fairly cheap too. I don't like spending $100+ per pickup and hearing a 'slight' improvement. I'd rather spend $40 each and make the amp melt.
heymisterk
That's a nice Strat copy. I like the 'bucker at the bridge. So yeah, I'd do it.

You like the guitar so it is worth it. Save your old parts so you can put them back if you want later down the road. If you do it yourself, take your time and cleanly de-solder the wires. Murph
Actually.............. I know a guy with a '79 3 bolt (screw) Strat. My '79 SG will kill you. Older pickups sound better. It's true.............. Why do you think they spend so much money trying to make them sound old?

saturn
If you're going to get new pickups, I suggest at least looking on http://guitarfetish.com. GFS P/Us are actually very good and not that expensive.

So save up some cash and buy a 8 string schecter or something, whatever you metal heads like. But in the words of Neo "You can't polish a turd" (It was Neo who said that right?)
