Kimolas
I don't like Burstbuckers, personally. Far too muddy in my tastes... I love the 490R and 498T that came with my Studio... The 498T has so much power... But if you wanted to be sure to have a great pup I'd go with a Seymore pup... From what I hear you can't go wrong... deepblue
Burstbucker Pros, No questions asked. They sound good on chambered guitars. My R9 has BB 1's & 2's....They sound old school rock. Thats just what the doctor ordered.
crossroadsnyc
BB Pro's are average sounding at best ... and I mean at the very best. If you want to stick w/Gibson, then look at the BB 1/2/3, or the 57 Classic/57 Classic + ... all of which are head & shoulders above the BB Pro's. chongo
I have many good thins about Seymour Duncans and the Gibson pups' date=' what are your thoughts?? [/quote'] Purely a personal taste issue. Most of the aftermarket manufacturers are just fine as far as quality of pickups goes (it is after all just some wire wound around a magnet) and most manufacturers use the same three gauges of wire and the same magnet materials. Honestly, most aftermarket manufacturers spend far more time tweaking advertising copy and photographs and scratching their heads over dealer relations, shipping and sales figures than they do tweaking pickups. And if they can convince someone that their $10 worth of wire and magnet are worth $150, then that's where they're going to sell it. I've had Gibson, Fender, Gretsch, Guild, DiMarzio, Bartolini, Bare Knuckle, Tom Anderson, Bill Lawrence, Carvin, and even some Tim White pickups on the guitars I have and they've all been good. EMG, Joe Barden, PRS, Agile, GuitarFetish, Lace Sensor (seen their Dually Humbuckers yet?), TV Jones, Ibanez, Yamaha and Kinman all make pickups that are currently available for or have recently shown up on LP type guitars. Lots of guitar manufacturers wind their own.
RichCI
Burstbucker Pros' date=' No questions asked.[/quote'] I question it. The 490R/498T set in my Custom sound awesome - not muddy.
BigKahune
It would be better to know what type of music you like to play - metal, classic rock, shredding, whatever else. I've got the 490R/498T in my SG which are the highest output of the Gibsons mentioned. Hot, but the BB Pros in my Lester are more versatile. Really hot - the 500T/496R combo. Yes, the SDuncans are good and there's some nice pups from Dimarzio. But, recommendations/choices depend on what you want to use them for.
Tim Plains
I love Burstbuckers 1 & 2. I hate Burstbucker Pros. The 490/498 is a really good set. I just put a set of Wolfetones in my Custom. They're incredible. I think if anybody's going to buy a set of Gibson pickups, they should also look at buying hand-wound ones, like Wolfetones. Not just Wolfetone but others, as well...WB, BareKnuckle, Voodoo, etc. They can cost around the same as a Gibson set. I paid $35 more for these Wolfetones than I would have for a pair of Gibson '57 Classics.

GLPS@35
You mean there are people who actually remove these burstbuckers out of their guitars? Ummmmm...Maybe im novice to this stuff, but I couldn't imagine removing a damn thing from this baby. Heck, I don't even want to put my pick guard on! GLPS@35
Pick guards are for teh gheyz ... lmao....Yea, I'm out on it! Ive been debating it just because it seems to give it more of the traditional 60's 70's look. I just don't want to cover up this beautiful finish! retrosurfer1959
If your gonna replace them go for some custom winds as others have said. If you really want something wild try a set of the Seymour Duncan P-Rails, And yep GLPS@35 wait a while and you'll be nodding guitars also it's tough to understand now with only the one lester but you'll get there especially if your GAS gets the best of you and you end up with a room full it's like a sports car there always just one more tweak you can try... The MarshallHead peaked my interest... http://forums.gibson.com/Default.aspx?g=posts&m=219809#219809 Pick guards are for teh gheyz ... Actually...in 1982, Wisconsin becomes the first state to outlaw discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. As a means of celebration, the gheyz in Wisconsin started removing their pickguards from their Les Pauls. True story but for some reason it doesn't show up on Google searches...
