Buzz

Hey guys,

I changed the strings on my BFG today, I went from 10-52's to 10-46's, and I noticed that there was buzz on the 4th string and the 5th to 9th frets of the low E string. I'm not very good at making adjustments so I was wondering what you think I should do.

Thanks in advance.

I assume you didn't have this issue before you changed string guage .Either go back to the heavier string or it will need a neck adjustment for the lighter string to get rid of the buzz. The heavier string pulls harder on the headstock and neck causing more bow in the neck therfore no buzz. The lighter string pulls less on the headstock and neck causing backbow in the neck. Therefore pulling the strings closer to the frets causing your buzz. "How to check" fret the low E string a the first fret and hold it down do not release it,with you other hand fret the same string at the 14th fret see if there is a gap between the string and the 7th fret if not the neck is backbowed and needs more relief. "How to fix" Mark the truss rod nut that way if need be you can put it back where it was. If you have the tool loosen the truss rod nut in the neck a quarter turn at a time and check for buzz in the areas you stated. Loosen the nut until the buzz goes away. It should more than likely take a quarter or half turn of loosening to fix this. But if you don't want too try this just put the heavier string back on it. Hope this helps you,

It could also just be a case of new strings, the same thing happens when I change my strings (even when there the same gauge). Just break them in, by playing and streching them for a bit, and it'l be fine. And, remember, it's always a good idea to change your strings one at a time, so that way there is always even tention on the neck.

Thanks for your help' date='

Which way would I turn the TR nut to loosen it?[/quote']

Counter clockwise will loosen it.

This is obviously the first time you are doing this, so I would caution that you be very careful in doing so. Be sure you DO NOT make more than a quarter turn adjustment at at time. Putting too much stress can/will destroy your guitar. So do a quarter turn, then check out how it looks ... if you need more, then just do another quarter turn.

I repeat ... DO NOT turn more than a quarter turn adjustment at a time.
