SG,

I appreciate your plight, but I sure can't pick you a wife. I have a Custom Bird, Ren did for me years back after much begging. It isn't the norm though. Neil Diamond, has a Dove. He has money also. You have single malt scotch!!! I can only hope you can find and play each instrument, 'cause it's your pleasure on this one. To cite the differences is the individual's opinion on the end sound to a large extent, after noting build specifics. The real question is: Have you thought of a Jumbo? You'll be after one of those then! You just have to play them, if they are on hand to do so and one will say,"hi" in that way that lets you know. You'll get all the material specifics as the day goes by. So keep the thinking cap on tight because there will be a lot of opinions.

SG,

I did a long reply and just deleted it. Too much wiggling on my part. I've never known a, Dove. I have a Custom Hummingbird, I absolutely love. You have the single malt scotch. I say get an SJ-200. Fire away guys and gals!

Speaking as someone who has owned both, (currently own a Hummingbird, and owned a Dove in the 70's) I would say if you can go the few extra pounds, I would choose the Dove.

I preferred the Dove in a natural finish, but that's just me.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Hummingbird, but there was something about the Dove, especially with the tune~o~matic bridge, that was for me at least, magical.

thanks for the info livesoundguy' date=' larryp58 is the true vintage range just like a VOS? ifsofacto why are they double the price?[/quote']

Logically, "true vintage" and "vintage original specs" suggest the same thing -- a guitar made true to the specs of the original vintage instruments. I didn't understand what the difference was and so asked this question several times myself, here on the forum and to salesmen in guitar stores. The salesmen had absolutely no idea what I was talking about. They knew that TV meant "true vintage" and VOS meant "vintage original specs," but could not explain how the two were similar/different. On this forum folks have told me that the difference was in items that came with the guitar: a jacket, a certificate, a case cover (IIR), etc.

Ideally, Gibson would have a page on their website where all of this was explained, along with complete specs for the guitars they are currently selling. Unfortunately, no such pages exist, so all of us here are left to puzzle it out. As rar responded to a poster who wanted to know what the "Gibson Custom Shop" decal on their new guitar meant: "unfortunately, there is no one who can tell you, because it doesn't exactly mean anything... It means the guitar is somehow different from any of the current standard production models."

Perhaps this is all we can say with any certainty about the TV / VOS question, too: they are somehow different from one another.

SG Dude, Welcome to the acoustic forum!

I say go for the Dove in Natural.

I am a Hummingbird player, but the Dove is just a little bit more individual in appearance and is a very different guitar to the Hummingbird. Think of the Dove as the middle ground between a Hummingbird and an SJ200.

I know those guitars-all three are at the GuitarGuitar in Glasgow, and I have played them all recently as I have been up in Scotland touring with my band and we always make a stop at GuitarGuitar on Trongate when we're in Glasgow...it's like three kids in a sweet shop!

The Hummingbird is nice, the natural Dove is exceptional, and the cherry sunburst Dove is okay, but not a patch on the other two. I personally love the Dove with the Tune-O-Matic (really different, slightly clunky/chunky tone, potential for perfect intonation) but in this case the other two have the edge.

It is hard to go wrong when picking a Hummingbird or Dove. Either is a great guitar, and I love my Hummingbird, but there is something so, well, different and beguiling about a Dove that would definitely lead me to recommend you go for one.

Plus, you've already got an Epi 'Bird, if you pick up a Dove you can have the best of both worlds :-)

Like Jayla says, they both suggest origional specs. And also, the case and case sleeve and jacket. In just the instrument, I believe the VOS models have the Red Spruce tops as opposed to the TV line with AAA Sitka spruce. I might be mistaken on this. I was told that was the only difference in the two. Either choice would be a fine upgrade. You really can't play a case cover or a jacket anyway! Right?!!! As for the price being doubled on these lines, all I can tell you is to go and play a few of them! Then you'll know why!

I'll take the looks of the Dove every time, but have never played one that sounded as good as the 'bird. It's all in what you like to see and hear, and instruments vary, but I would buy a 'bird unseen.

The differences are hog and short-scale (usually): 'bird. Maple, long scale: Dove. The 'bird is sweeter, a strummer with a great punchy sound, quick woody decay. The Dove is stronger, clearer, more separated, and, I think, harsher. You know these are generalizations.
