Model playability

Hi Everyone,

I’m in the market for a new Les Paul and could do with some advice. I’ve been playing for a few years with an epi copy which has been very good, but now want - no need - the real thing.

My dilemma is this : should it be a Standard or a 58 VOS?plaintop ( can’t afford a 59 ). My main concern is with fret height. The specs seem to suggest that the Standard has relatively high frets compared with the 58. Also it seems that the 58 has a longer neck tennon, can’t find any pictures of this at the moment can anyone point me in the right direction ? I’m worried abour playability with :

1. High frets on Standard and

2. higher fret accessabitity on the 58

Obviously I shall play before buying but wanted some expert feedback first. Can you help - all answers appreciated. Incidentally I play Blues / Rock.

Many thanks

Paul

Paulh,

I was going through the samething. I was at first going to get a '58 VOS plaintop. Then I played an '07 Standard. For the savings (roughtly $1000) I took the '07 Standard because playability was very close and I have a place near me that has a plek machine if I wanted to have that done (the VOS are plek'd thus the lower frets). Cost of a plek is $160. Sure you get the long Neck Tenon, fake Bumble Bee Caps and CTS pots (I have upgraded my pots with RS Guitar works kit and Vitamin Q caps for less than $60) along with the other things. But the final deciding factor was "If I ding up the '58 VOS I will be pissed", the '07 is meant to be played and I do not care if it get a little dinged up. Plus with the saving $1000 I bought a Fender American Strat to have both guitars.

Of course this is just my opinion and what I finally decided on.

Get the one that sounds good to you and feels good. Remember play as many as you can. When I got my '07 Standard it was at the Gibson Showcase in Nashville. I was there for a few hours and played about 20 Standards, 5 VOS and even some Epis. Finally picked the one I have. Played just as good as the VOS and sounds just as good to me for what I play.

May I say this IS a good answer.

No matter what trend is, no influence by marlet or fashion: you ask, you play, you try another and so on.

You will definetely feel which is the one for you - no doubt!

Just do it.
