I´m not getting the point of your question, but yes, older Les Paul Customs weren´t made at the custom shop. But I can´t give you the exact year. Mine is a 1985 and it definitely wasn´t made in Gibsons custom shop.

Greetings

Actually I think you bring up a good point! The custom shop end of Gibson is supposedly producing superior guitars to the normal Gibson USA line, so it does beg the question, are post 2004 Gibson Les Paul Custom Shop Customs superior in quality to the pre 2004 ones?

Personally as much as I love Gibson, I also can see they are savvy business people (as well as a great Guitar brand). I think with their wonderful imagination (ie selling the same guitar in millions of guises) sometimes they produce contradictions/ idiosyncrasies in their marketing. is this one of them?

Yes, the custom was part of the USA line and now it's part of the custom shop line.

I think it's a very interesting thread/topic, and most people don't know this, some of them haven't even wondered about it (you know as most of us would think the custom would be a custom shop instrument).

Any of you guys know the year this started? I remember someone posted it a while ago on a different thread, but can't remember the year or who posted it.

I believe it was late 2003 that Customs were still a part of the USA line.

Before moving to the custom shop. (shop)

When the Custom was introduced into the LP lineup in '54 (some say late '53) it was not made by the custom department which made the one-off instruments which came in on a Custom-Order type basis.

As what we now know as the 'Custom Shop' only came into being as a follow-on from what was previously called the 'Historic Division', the C-S hasn't been around for that long. Perhaps a decade, at a guess?

Edit; I've just spotted that Axe is on this thread - I'm sure he'll be able to clear this up......

Personally, and now days, I wouldn't purchase a Nashville Gibson that wasn't made in the Custom Shop. I realize fully that is just my opinion and I base it on what I see hanging. Then that takes us to the question of Memphis being called a Custom Shop and as an ES player, "they aint all custom care".

Fair enough!, Please read my friend. I don't necessarily believe my own thoughts that follow, but it is a thought...

Now this is a rant about modern society, and a hypothesis connected with Gibson quality and marketing that perhaps mirrors it.

You know the accusations in the media about exams being dumbed down? (I assume it is the same in the States as in the UK) ie we have an A** , it is really the old A Grade, but so many people are getting A's, they have invented the star and double star to display the people that are cleverer in school exams!! (please don't laugh :) )

(The government says everyone is so much cleverer that we need higher passes-yes I buy that...NOT)

Are guitars getting dumbed down too? ie the present Custom shop Gibson Guitar is what would have passed yesteryear as normal standard Gibson?

If the answer is yes, then people are paying more and more for a decent guitar.

Matt disclaimer-I am happy with my Gibson (non custom shop guitars) but interested to hear opinions.

Personal taste= I dont like the les paul custom. I love the way those square neck inlays look, I love the way the headstock inlay looks, but I can't stand that multi-layer binding on the body and the bound headstock. Just not my thing.

Yet again, TG, I agree with every word you say.

Until, of course, I saw that link to the $ 350.00 Alpine White Custom............With or without the Brie...........

Well we all got our views on things...

Its all marketing, they didn't change anything on them, its the same guitar. They just moved its classification to the custom shop division and gave it a new CSxxxxx serial number series and a certificate, but its the same damn guitar.

Sear, I read your post. Yes. But, I see your point, I think. "Thats The Way Of The World" j.h.

Carrot, Unless Gibson has changed since 2006, they are not the same guitar...... for d - mn certain.

Having said that. No matter what one does model wise, he or she has got to exam the thing as if it's the last one he will ever purchase. Gibson acknowledged a couple of years ago, no more seconds, step up production speed and quantity, etc. all in an effort to stay in the game. Q.C. is virtually absent as a result and so we have to look'em over as if our lives depended on finding a well done guitar.

If the answer is yes, then people are paying more and more for a decent guitar.

Carrot,

Unless Gibson has gone further down the hill, they are not the same guitar.

When Gibson truly separated the Custom Shop for real a few years back, they also announced there would be no more seconds and they would produce more guitars at a faster pace in order to stay in the game. So much for Q.C. So, whatever model we buy from whatever Gibson named division, we had best look it over as if it will be the last Gibson we will ever purchase.
