Homz Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Yeah, this band has taken a lot of heat lately. I just watched an interview on the bio channel with them. I do admit their new stuff isn't all that special, but I just did a youtube search for the "Iris" vid and that song just kicks ***. I had played it years ago, but had virtually stopped all Goo Goo Dolls songs due the the re-tunning requirements. Now that I have he robot guitar back from the shop I think we will add "Iris" back on the play list. Here's the vid. mentioned. "Iris"
NeoConMan Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I always liked "Long Way Down." The band I play with now and then does it, good mid-tempo rocker with sustaining power chords. My 335 loves it!
Homz Posted April 18, 2009 Author Posted April 18, 2009 In fact the Robot might do well on "Iris". It definitely doesn't have the punch of my Standard. Smooth might be the way to go with that song. Or maybe I'll use the 12string Ovation. Hmm, things to think about. If I use the 12 string that will be all I use it for since the re-tuning requirements. I'm going to have to look up those re-tuning requirements they are very odd as I remember.
Flight959 Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I always thought Iris was the only decent song they did... Flight959
saturn Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I haven't heard anything from them in a while, but I always liked the songs that I herad. It's kind of funny, but my two favorites of theres are Iris and Long Way Down. I have something in common with both Homz and Neo :)
NeoConMan Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Yeah' date=' this band has taken a lot of heat lately. [/quote']Why? What did I miss? I haven't even heard of them in 3 or 4 years, what are they taking heat for? I saw "Behind The Music" or something like that about those guys several years ago. Pretty interesting. As I recall, they got signed and got several breaks due to the persistence of the bass player - forgot his name. Johnny Reznickczechzyck was content to play clubs and party, making enough cash to get by while living large in Buffalo. Seems he didn't really think they were good enough to actually get a record deal and so on.... Bass player pushed him and got him to finish songs, got him to meet with people, and stay sober enough to play well. I was left with the impression it took both of them to make it - one with talent, one with brains and fortitude. Most of their music does little for me, except for the afore-mentioned Long Way Down. Iris was okay the first million times I heard it, but I see where it might be a crowd pleaser to play live.
Thundergod Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I always thought Iris was the only decent song they did... Flight959 Me too
RichCI Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I remember watching them perform a cover of "*****" on MTV with some other dude (Lance Diamond) singing along with a horn section back in the 90's and they kicked ***. Here's the video that I hadn't seen since the broadcast until this morning. It proves that The Goo Goo Dolls aren't just another sappy "alternative" ballad band.
RichCI Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Geez... he plays the same kind of shitty, bastardized Chuck Berry solos that I do.

[/quote'] Well I used to watch them in the late 80s and early 90s when they obviously weren't famous. They definitely took the long road to fame. I went to high school with their producer. Buffalo is more known for its jazz players than its rock ones and it's really nice that they haven't forgotten their roots. Johnny Reznick moved back here from LA a while ago. Robby Takac (the bass player) is very involved with the community. He started the Buffalo Music and Arts festival and helps local bands. Whether you like their music or not, I think they deserve a lot of credit for all their other work...
saturn Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I have a rehearsal tonight and now I'm going to suggest we add Long Way Down to the set. Thanks Homz and Neo for the idea :)
James Allen Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Sorry guys, Never could get into the Goo Goo dolls. I know they've got a few cool songs, just not my cup of tea.
MReynolds Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I got introduced to the Goo Goo Dolls back about 8 years ago. One of the talk radio guys was big on Johnny Reznick so I thought I'd give them a listen. I wouldn't say I'd play them all day long but I really like some of their songs. If I was in a band right now and wanted to do some of their stuff I think "Iris", just because it was a big hit for them. Also "Black Balloon" is pretty good as is "Broadway". Those three songs are off their "Dizzy up the Girl" album. I think my favorites are "Here is Gone" and "Big Machine" from the album "Gutterflower"
