stone
I'm restringing my J-160E with acoustic strings. It's a 2002 Bozeman, solid spruce top model. I want to keep that Beatle vibe in the tone. Any recs?
stone
Well, I went ahead and threw some Martin SP 12-54s on there last night. Boy did this guitar come alive acoustically! It's like a totally different guitar. Maybe a touch too bright for my taste, but they should be perfect after a weekend of good playing. What's everyone else using? Eddie Rondack
I don't have any answers, just more questions... I've always been curious about how that guitar would sound with phosphor bronze... I assumed it would be very close to a J-45. Was I right? How does the magnetic pickup work with the phosphor bronze? Thanks!

I think the result wouldn't be very Beatle-ish to my ears -- I use flatwounds on my laminate-top, ladder-braced J-160e to keep it nice and "dead" and Beatle-y sounding -- but people's ears differ, especially when it comes to the effect of strings on tone. I've always been curious about how that guitar would sound with phosphor bronze... I assumed it would be very close to a J-45. Well' date=' that would make sense: the solid-top, X-braced J-160e [i']is[/i], for all practical purposes, a J-45 with a P-100 on it. How does the magnetic pickup work with the phosphor bronze? Using phos bronze strings works fine with a mag pickup -- I use phos bronze on my J-190, which has both a P-100 and an undersaddle pickup -- although the poles need to be raised under the wound strings to get reasonable balance. -- Bob R

The sound is no longer "Beatle-ish". I know what you mean by "dead". Sort of muted, without much resonance, but a punchy sound I liked too, for this guitar, none the less. However, the sound with the PBs is so radically different, and un-Beatle-ish I'm going to leave them on for awhile as it's like having a new guitar. I haven't tried the flatwounds yet, so when I go back to electric strings those will definitely go on.

I'll let you know about that too.

Aaresz
Thanks. I'll make a note of that. What guage? It doesn't specify on the spec sheet, but in checking the GC website it looks like they may only come in one guage.

stone
'05 Rogue Spyder Resonator VS-cheap and very cool! Cool! I bought two of those last summer when MF had them on SDOTD. A round neck, VS for myself and a square neck VS for my wife's sister as a birthday present. What a great bargain for a well made and good sounding instrument. People that come over and have seen that little Rogue resonator sitting on its stand always comment on how beautiful it is . I know it's a cheapy but it's still way more than I thought it would be. I'm not a Dobro player by any means but play it like a guitar. "Good Night Irene", ala Willie Nelson, sounds great on it. I must say this for the benefit of my J-45 that watches my every move, when I'm with a different guitar, J is still my favorite!!
