Flight959
Guys, This is also posted in the electric section of the forums but I reckon you acoustic boys/girls will be better suited to help me out.. I know some of you are really good at playing or should I say learning by ear? I'd really like to play the song in the following clip. Can any of you guitar gurus help me with the Chords?? I have found two versions on the net which are not right... Its a new Song by Starsailor called "hurts too much" I know the Capo is on the second fret... Any help would be VERY MUCH APPRECIATED! Thanks guys! Flight959
BigKahune
the chords here are basically correct: http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/tabs/s/starsailor/hurts_too_much_crd.htm except in the video he's suspending E and A : E on the 2nd string and A on the 1st string. On those cords where you can't suspend the 2nd string (like Esus4 and Am), suspend the A on the 1st string. Try it, you'll get what I mean. For example: c=capo ...Em....................C.....................G.......................D.................Esus4 e|- c - - 5 -........- c - - 5 -........- c - - 5 -........ - c - - 5 -........ - c - - 5 - B|- c - - 5 -........- c - - 5-.........- c - - 5 -........ - c - - 5 -........ - c - - 5 - G|- c - - - -........ - c - - - -........ - c - - - -........ - c - 4 - -........ - c - 4 - - D|- c - 4 - -........- c - 4 - -........- c - - - -........ - c - - - -..........- c - 4 - - A|- c - 4 - -........- c - - 5 -........- c - 4 - -........ - c - - - -..........- c - 4 - - E|- c - - - -........ - c - - 5 -........- c - - 5 -........ - c - - - -..........- c - - - - on that C use your 3rd finger to press down both the 5th and 6th stings on the 5th fret. on that Esus4 use your 1st finger to press down the 5th, 4th and 3rd strings on the 4th fret - doing it that way, you can keep the E and A suspended with your 3rd and 4th fingers. Flight959
Im loosing the will to live now. I think the version from the tab site is way off the live version. The live version and the recorded version are very similar except the recorded version is very pop sounding... Flight959
Flight959
Right, Bigkahune... I think I have finally got it however the middle chord you posted doesnt seem right... I have been told the Esus 4 shoul be replaced with this chord which does sound better --------------------------------------/ --------------------------------------/ --------------------------------------/ ----2--------------------------------/ 1------------------------------------/ ----2-------------------------------- What chord is this? It also sounds better without the capo for some reason... A BIG thanks Flight959
BigKahune
hmmm... is that bottom string the low E? if it is, and the chord form is being fingered on the 1st and 2nd frets, those three notes are in the F#7/Gb7 chord. If it sounds good to you, cool. That middle chord fingered on the nut (not the capo) is a C/G add 9 and 12 which is a C with a G base and the D and G above the 8th added. 3rd finger on strings 5 & 6 at third fret, 2nd finger on 4th string second fret, 3rd finger on 2nd string third fret and 4th finger (pinky) on 1st string third fret. Yer welcome
Flight959
Actually I have drawn it wrong.. -------------------------------/ -------------------------------/ ------2-------------------------/ --1-----------------------------/ ------2------------------------/ -------------------------------/ Thats what it should look like... BigKahune
okay... that makes more sense... it's a Emaj7 sus4 (fingered at the nut) the middle chord you posted doesnt seem right... Okay, don't play the sixth string (dead it) so it would be a C add 9 and 12 BTW, that's a nice performance and interesting arrangement.

Gitfidl
There are few special rules about chords in a song. There is a "numbering system" which gioves you the sequence for 1-4-5 (most songs) and how to interchange minors. If you take a simple chromatic scale C-D-E-F-G-A-B-C (no flats or sharps ) you have an octave (8 notes) but actually we know there are 12 notes including flats/sharps which are the same thing. (Ab=G#) Here is a numbering system ... notice how 1-4-5 is actually i-iv-v or I-IV-V OK so if you change keys the numbering is still valid there is a scale for that key and thr root =1 and there is a 4th and a 5th note above root. Most of the time we use a 7th for the V note and the 7th "wants" to resolve to root. (It builds tension in your ear and then resolves when root os played. Well OK .. you can study further if you do not do 1-4-5 and want something jazzy ii-V-i (2-5-1) or 1-6-2-5 which is Doo-wop-ish) and you can study the circle of 5ths to know you keys That is enough anyway. There is a bunch of stuff on minor keys and minor scales but what open that can of worms. There are also a bunch of rules for Saxes and Horns (Eb and Bb) but what good is that to a guitar? You can "substitute" certain kinds of chords for other kinds of chords -- a major (root) can be substituted with a 6th or a Major7th. A 6th is 6 above root .. and is ALSO a minor -- ever root has a "relative minor" -- hence every 6th is also a min7th and conversely. You can "substitute" a 7th by going outside the octave and using a 9th, 11th or 13th (and you have to be the judge on voicing) OR you can use a diminished (a "high" 7th) or an augmented -- so there are a LOT of possibilities there -- and you can use them as you please. Whatever sounds good to you. If a song gas a min7th which is also a 6th then you know that you can "flip" back and forth between the major and the relative minor. Many guitarists do (again -- it is up to your ear and maybe your audience) If you view a chord as a 4-fret-box .. then inside the BOX is a scale set and so some guitarist call that "playing over a chord" (and some mean playing inside the scale used by the chord -- which kinda-sorta ends up being the same thing.) Well anyway your hands do not have to be all over the fretboard like white on rice. You can play very comfortably in a "box" or two and not be moving around much. There are only two ways to end a song -- by slowing down (ritardo) or with a tag (often a couple of bars of chords -- or "shave and a haircut two bits" or a major7th (Nickie Parrot does it -- you tube - I Don't Know Enough about You). Actually you can do anything (that works) and you hear it all the time. AND some styles of players DON'T work (from a musicians point of view) but the audience likes it. Ramsey Lewis used to be able to "pretend" he was ending a song .. then go back and play a riff and pretend again and the audience would giggle because they knew he was messing with them. I think he did it in "Hang on Snoopy, Snoopy Hand on" and some others. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNLgnoW0nqs (Incidentally that is VERY SKILLFUL to start "interacting" with an audience in ANY way musically. You are asking them to "get involved" -- and they do)
