Jesus Is Dead In My Basement Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 I noticed that he used a Fender Telecaster for the first 3 Led Zeppelin Albums and even Recorded the greatest song ever made "Stairway to heaven" on a Fender 12 string and a Telecaster.
surfpup Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 In a rock trio format the Tele can be a little thin ya know. This is not so apparent on recordings if you have some studio experience (as Page certainly did) and know how to track it, but live...
MReynolds Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 From what I've been able to tell by reading he used LPs even before Zep. You might try checking these out: http://www.zeppinhood.net/lzequip/index.htm http://hubpages.com/hub/Real-Guitar-Heroes-Worlds-Best-Guitarists---JIMMY-PAGE
Tim Plains Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 What made Jimmy Page switch to the Les Paul ? Tone...
:oilpit: Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Because I'm too lazy to read all that JP stuff. I'm pretty sure it was because when someone painted his Tele, it broke one of the pickups, the neck I think...
DamienAzrael Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Tone... Hahaha....Nice...that's what I was thinkin'
Rocky4 Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 The out of phase sound. Almost a Nashville sound. IT TAKES A LOT OF BALLS TO QUESTION JIMMY PAGE, THE GREATEST ROCK GUITARIST OF ALL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
FirstMeasure Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 The way I heard it, Jimmy Tele just wasn't road worthy anymore. He was broke at the time (all his money was wrapped up in Zep), Joe Walsh found out about his dilema and gave Jimmy a Honey Burst Les Pauls. Joe Walsh said in an interwiew, "I had two of 'em, and I wasn't using it. I figured he needed more than I did" or something like that.

Murph Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Tone... Yep. And experiance. He was young. Tone is a learning process.
Californiaman Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Yeah, tone. He plugged it in hit a couple of chords, did some bluesy licks on it and said, "This is it." The rest is history.
Murph Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 greatest song ever made "Stairway to heaven" I'm gonna have to call you on that. The Greatist Song Ever Made? Is Jesus Dead? Give him a few hours. See what happens. You don't own a basement, do you? Do you even own a house? You're in a trailer park in Baytown, huh?

Why would the choice of my screen name even bother you? And no i do not live in Baytown i live in South West Houston and if you want to visit me any day of the week you can come on over. P.S I also do not see the point of acting like a pompous, pugnacious prick it only makes you look like a Catholic School boy with a pixie ****.

Jesus Is Dead In My Basement Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Nope i still think it was tone. I believe it was the tone as well.
FirstMeasure Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 This may explain how he got it' date=' but why did he keep using it? The answer, once again, is TONE![/quote'] Jimmy said he could never find another guitar with the Tone his tele had, including other tele's. He used that Tele for a lot (and I mean a lot) of studio recordings. So really, he wanted to keep his Tele because of Tone. And the original question was, "What Made Jimmy Page Switch To A Les Paul?" not "Why Didn't Jimmy Page Get Rid Of His Les Paul". The reason he switched was he needed a new Guitar and Joe Walsh turned him on to a Les Paul.
myspace.com/jessenoah Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 in a direct quote from the man himself it was the "shaved shallow" neck of the LP, that was similar to the tele that he loved so much PAGE FANS!!! a wealth of photos, and reliable info http://www.mylespaul.com/forums/vintage-les-pauls/22836-jimmy-page-history-his-guitars-26.html
LickMyLovePump Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 For all you Zeppelinian gearheads here's a way cool website with a comprehensive list of Jimmy's equipment through the Zeppelin years: http://kozmicblues.webs.com/index.htm As for why he switched, well, my two cents are because as someone posted before, the rock trio format and Zep's newer songs needed a little more of that "crunch"/"ooompf" (whatever you call it) that only a humbucked heavy as hell guitar could bring. He continued to use the Tele throughout the recordings, but as for live... nothing beats a good ole' Paula.
