Moose Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Hey, I have a Walnut SG Standard from '74ish....The fret board looks like Ebony? Or is it just a dark Rosewood???
dem00n Posted April 18, 2009 Posted April 18, 2009 Posting pics would help alot... Heres how to post pics: http://forums.gibson.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=11276
Murph Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 My '79 "The SG" has an ebony board. It's solid Walnut, not a stain. Great playing and sounding guitar. They ("The SG") were budget models at the time. I don't have any info about a Walnut Standard. There are far more knowlegable SG guys in this forum than I.
Murph Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Use the H-horn then wait. patiently. :- Good one. Murph.
Moose Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Obviously, I still dont know what the F ing H-horn is!! Hey Murf, Just realized you threw a snubby in your list!!
jimmiJAMM Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Obviously' date=' I still dont know what the F ing H-horn is!![/quote'] That would be code for a certain member who's knowledge of SG's is apparently limitless.
Moose Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Oh OK, Calling the SG GURU H-HORN! Come in H-Horn!! Hey Neogeo, My 74 is A LOT like your 78!! Ebony fretboard or just dark Rosewood???
jimmiJAMM Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 I tell ya, Moose, no ebony on mine. Rosewood all the way.
Moose Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 Thanks Neo! It says Rosewood in all the specs...I just thought Rosewood was lighter in color. How u like the Gibson tuners & the Super Humbuckers??
jimmiJAMM Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Thanks Neo!It says Rosewood in all the specs...I just thought Rosewood was lighter in color. How u like the Gibson tuners & the Super Humbuckers?? Amazing! Those Tarback Buckers are ballz-2-the-wall and those Gibson Groveresque tuners hold tight as a duck's a$$. I ABSOLUTELY love that thing!
hbomb76 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Sorry I was late on the draw, guys. I had an emergency talking a kid out of a Viper with EMG's and into a nice, clean and well-kept wine red SG Special instead. To answer the question at hand, the fretboard is rosewood. All that "70s" wood was darker, y'all didn't know that? B) I mean, there's ALWAYS a possibility of ANYTHING back then sneaking out a little different, but Standards didn't see a lot of ebony action till the late-70's. Depending on the stock, the cut, the treatment, the breed, etc, woods can vary greatly. Factor in natural aging and that's something else to take into consideration. You can tell it's ebony by smoother appearance with less porous/woodgrain appearance, whereas rosewood you can tell it's "wood". H-Bomb
max2343 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 The Fingerboard is the finest----natural ebony and those TGA'S are Smoke-in -Balls to the Walls Hot. Here is a 1979 ad
Moose Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 Hey Max that was a good tip! I read the catalogs from 73 & 76 (no 74 or 75)! The guitar was sold to me as a 73. But the pots say mid 74. and some calculator for the serial numbers said late 74 early 75 in Mish. plant. The 76 standards DO come with Ebony boards....I tell you my board looks damn dark & smooth!! W nice pearl blocks! But the serial numbers (mine's in 200000's) were so screwy then it's hard to tell!! My guitar seems to get a new age every day!!! Maybe it's a 76???? Would the pots be sitting around the shop over a year???? Thanks for everybody's help!!

hbomb76 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 thaank god ESP sux Don't I know it. I have a Viper I took in on trade from some D-bag who owed me money...haven't been able to get rid of it. I'll admit it's very playable' date=' but DAYUM is it ugly. And sounds like a turd through a megaphone. Wonder what it'd be like with some GFS PAF's in it....hmmmmm If you ever get the chance to play one of the ESP/Edwards REAL SG clones, DO IT. They are fantastic. The only one I was disappointed with was one with a Maestro (plain, non-engraved of course) that had an awful finish. It was like Gibson's cheapass thinned-out clearcoat, sinking into the wood really terribly and everything. The color was FAR superior to a Historic (nice and deep REAL red), but the horrid topcoat made me pass on it. Otherwise, sounded and played superbly. But the Viper? Not so much. I might mod it with real pickups just to piss off the metalhead nads. H-Bomb

max2343 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 So what you just know a bunch of guys that have shitty-low end Ibanez/Esp/ and BC Rich Guitars that are poorly set up out of Ignorance. Or you just don't know the difference of a Damn Good Ibanez/Esp or BC Rich Guitar (even some low end models) from one of your Squier Affinity guitars you have listed as owning, even if someone taught you how to play a simple chord progression=d>
lcgyy Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 In my opinion Battlestar Galactica season1-4dvd is one of the best sci-fi shows ever made. Not only does it have a very original and compelling premise but it also has some of the best and most original characters of any TV show. Supernatural-Seasons-1-4-DVD As well as this it manages to pull of not only convincing character development but also manages to move the show itself forward at a steady and realistic pace. lost season1-4 dvdThe-X-Files-Seasons-1-9-DVD It has great writers with fabulous plotlines and dialogue. The acting is also some of the best you will find in a genre show of this type. Scrubs-Seasons-1-7-DVD-Boxset Richard Dean Anderson in particular ii am not really into realistic programmes. i watched "hollyoaks" for a while and a love doctor who season1-4dvd."prison break" thats it. i love programmes like Smallville-Seasons-1-8-DVD-Boxset "Lost-Season-1-4-DVD-Boxset" .Las-Vegas-Seasons-1-5-DVD-Boxset-DVDS ."Buffy-The-Vampire-Slayer-Seasons-1-7-DVD-Boxset" , 24 Hours seasons1-6dvd.The-Wire-Seasons-1-5-DVD. chongo Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Thanks Neo!It says Rosewood in all the specs...I just thought Rosewood was lighter in color. The combination of acid sweat, finger oil, DNA and random epithelial cells, plus miscellaneous crud will do that to almost anything. Always a chance that used motor oil was used as a fretboard conditioner. Always a chance that someone liked his fretboards darker and used some vinegar and steel wool to get it that way. Grain patterns, however, will usually out rosewood vs. ebony.

Dub-T-123 Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 I like ibanez. My friend had a cheap semihollow (like 300 bucks) and it was really good. Not just good for the money just straight up good. It wasn't a shreddy looking guitar at all but you could shred on it easily. It had a great neck. Broken headstock repaired with gorilla glue and a drill. So I have nothing against ibanez or a good bc rich but I know exactly what your talking about and I hate it too. By the way that ibanez was ugly as hell.
Murph Posted May 11, 2009 Posted May 11, 2009 Obviously' date=' I still dont know what the F ing H-horn is!! Hey Murf, Just realized you threw a snubby in your list!![/quote'] Yea. I keep it handy. Murph.
