Gibson Victory Bass......yay or nay?

Long time ago, friend of mine had a mid eighties Victory bass. Metallic red, rosewood fretboard, bolt-on neck, big tuners, etc.. I always thought it was pretty cool but I NEVER hear of anyone who has one or ever did have one. Seems they are scoffed at like a red-haired stepchild. I wouldn't mind finding one like my friend had. Since nobody likes them, they must be cheap, right? Anybody have an opinion on the Victory bass? Anyone know where one could be had?

Years ago I played a silver one in a local music store. My impression at the time was that it was Gibson's attempt to produce a "Fender"-ish bass. I remember the tuners were huge and the headstock seemed a bit awkward. The body wasn't bad- but seemed a bit more 80's styled than the headstock did. These come up on Ebay every now and then, and there is an article online you can check out for more 411:

When I've seen these used, they've been fairly cheap - so I would say get one if you find one. No idea on what they sound like. I had an '80's explorer bass that I absolutely hated (worst bass I've ever played) but I Love my T-birds- so its up to you if it works for you who cares what others think.
