Bluebird_12 Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 Hi; I am new to the forum and just bought my first Gibson in about 20 years. I picked up the faded used and was wondering how you can tell which neck profile it has? What are the specs of each? Tnx!
Tim Plains Posted April 19, 2009 Posted April 19, 2009 '50s is thicker, '60s is slim. I'd say call Gibson with the serial number and ask them. Pictures?
Bluebird_12 Posted April 19, 2009 Author Posted April 19, 2009 So, there is no difference in the nut width, just the thickness?
MikeRom Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Congrats on the ax and welcome! Don't forget to post some pics in the standard faded club thread- Only difference is thickness
GuitarGuy503 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Generally, you really have to experience them both for yourself to grasp the difference. My 2004 Standard was documented with a 50's neck but it feels more like 60's neck (or between a 50's and 60's neck at best). With that being said it can be difficult to distinguish between 50's and 60's necks strictly by feel unless the wood of the neck really fills your hand. My point being that some necks undoubtedly feel like 50's necks while others are on the slimmer side and feel more like a 60's neck. 50's necks are known for their chunkyness but can be quite the opposite and may vary (sometimes by alot) from LP to LP. This is one of many reasons why it is bad idea to buy a LP online. Your best bet would be to contact Gibson with the serial number of your LP and let them look up the official neck profile of your LP.
Xinnix Posted May 26, 2009 Posted May 26, 2009 I know this is a month old but I just joined today. If you want to be sure its a 60's neck it will be marked inside the pickup cavity. I put nickel covers on mine and both cavities had markings. One was for the finish and the other was the neck size. Sorry, no pics. Xinnix
