Jesus Is Dead In My Basement Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 In my honest opinion i feel like a great Guitarist is one that can write a song that sounds amazing rather than compose hard songs to play, For example Stairway to Heaven one of the easiest songs to play and probably unarguably the greatest song in the cosmos is a very easy song to learn. I know lately with all the metal stuff going around Kids think who ever can play the Hardest, Fastest songs is the greatest guitarist. But i want your opinion.

TinFish Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 I think knowing when enough is enough is a quality most good guitarists poses. I think Slash was great at this, his solos were somewhat simple and very complementary to the song they were played in. On the other end of the spectrum you had guys like EVH (I know VH fans will disagree with me) who was trying to show how fast he could play and whose solos (IMO) overshadowed the songs themselves and ruined them to some extent.

rocketman Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Lots of answers to this one. I really can't answer why I like the players that inspire me. All I know is that everyone should have an open mind. What I do hate is when people say "so and so is overrated." I think everyone has something to offer. I love SRV because of his feeling yet at the same time my favorite band is Rush. On the piano side I love Count Basie yet his music isn't nearly as sophisticated as Gershwn's who is my favorite artist. Mozart played a lot of notes, but there is a certain eloquence to his style. Many people do not like the sound of Schoenberg, but he invented a completely new style never seen before. His music sounds bizarre but it's brilliantly conceived...
solacematt Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 Play for the song. In the end, it's all about the song, not how fast some dip can move their fingers, or how hard/heavy the tune is. In the end, the songs you remember (for good reason) are the songs that are just that; songs.

I am in 100% in agreement with you, I can appreciate Zeppelin for the Nice Drum Solos and Catchy Guitar Riffs but i can also appreciate Rush for the amazing Bass solos as well as the Beatles for their amazing song writing skills and Music in general.
djroge1 Posted April 20, 2009 Posted April 20, 2009 I would have to say both can be equally important. I think it is wrong to assume that composing a technically brilliant song means playing fast. In fact, I would Stairway as the perfect analogy of this. Today we all know and love that song as it's a great sounding song and fairly easy to play. However, when it was written it was ahead of it's time at least for Rock-n-Roll. It is a technically brilliant song the way the opening chords both walk down on the bass lines while walking up on the high strings. IMHO, I say the guitarest who can do both is more well rounded and I would call them the better guitarist.

The first measure of a Song is exactly like the first measure of a recipe, The first step without wich the rest couldn't follow. James Allen Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Music and mucisianship is all about expressing yourself and reaching people. If you are only composing songs that are technical, are you really trying to speak to anyone, or are you just speaking to yourself? If you can use your guitar to write fresh, interesting music and use your guitar to express yourself and speak to people, then, I feel you've become a great guitar player.
Basshole Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 What makes a great guitarist? If other people like the music. If he can play diffrent styles of music. If he plays with passion (whatever that might be).
matiac Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 A great guitar! Couldn't vote for both, I believe both qualities make for a great guitarist, I have neither, I just do it.
Swmcv2007 Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 In my opinion a great guitarist is someone who does things their own way but still finds a way to reach people.
daveinspain Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 For example Stairway to Heaven one of the easiest songs to play and probably unarguably the greatest song in the cosmos is a very easy song to learn. Easy for you to say.... I can play parts of it.
myspace.com/jessenoah Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 great tone, good chops, epic phrasing, cool image, and a whole lotta hair makes a good guitarist:-"
Californiaman Posted April 22, 2009 Posted April 22, 2009 Not only one who is passionate about his/her playing, but someone who understands moderation while playing. Also the best guitarists give of themselves totally. They're teachers as well as great musicians.
