rocketman
Learn some theory first, develop strength in your fingers by doing some exercises each time you play (always warm up) and then have fun playing! There are a lot of great beginner books out there. I haven't found a really bad one, so pick one up if you need to do so...

:oilpit:
I would say don't use tabs. If you start out learning stuff by ear, you will have a MUCH easier time later in your musical career. Start small, I suggest Happy Birthday and Twinkle Twinkle, those were the first things I learned by ear.

charlie brown
If they are serious, and old enough that one's pretty sure it's not just a passing fancy, then get the absolute best guitar, they can afford...and "grow into it," instead of out of it...much cheaper, in the long run, and, generally...much easier to play, so they'll stay with it. Beyond that...and what other's have already suggested..."Practice, Practice, Practice!" ;>) Â CB
Gitfidl
My advice would be to have fun with your guitar every time you play it. It does not matter how well you play aor what you play .... just have fun. Then every time you come back to it you are coming back to fun. Like riding a bicycle or paddling a canoe or riding a horse. If it is always fun you will never grow tired of it. Everything else will come over time. Gosh I can remember (with a smile )-- playing Wabash Cannonball with my kids (sometimes in the kitchen laughing) or Elvis with my high school friends. Always had fun. Â Everybody wants to sing along. Kids like nutty songs like On Top of Spaghetti -- Bingo (dumb) but they love it -- Old Lady Swallowed a Fly. Church songs, camp songs, folk songs -- Found a Peanut. (toot toot peanut butterrrrr) Â Anything FUN. Mountain Dew, Oklahoma Hills, Okie from Muskogee, Honey Babe, Yellow Rose ... who cares if they are not top ten? Â There's nothing really wrong with tabs, but if people rely on them too much they can be bad. You should try and learn things by ear, it's a much more practical tool. And I've found, a LOT of tabs are wrong...

I listened, and I learned.  I still do it that way. Once I hear it, I can play it. Why make it optical?  Ha.......  Good one :oilpit  Murph. djroge1
Playing guiar should be a life-long learning process. Â Learn as much as you can - learn by ear, tabs, sheet music. Learn theory and learn how to ignore theory when you need to. Learn more than just major scales - learn the minors and when/how to use them. Learn chord substitution and use it.
