Mark Lee Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Are Gibson floating pickup models (Johnny Smith, Citation, and Le Grande) really that much acoustically nicer than Epiphone Emperor Regents and Elitist Emperor Regents? My Emperor Regent is my most inexpensive guitar, yet it has such a nice tone that when I played it at a gig in a small cafe, I got a comment from another musician who said that it sounds just as good as his L7-C. I would be hesitant to play my more valuable archtops in a cafe setting, and because the cafe is small, I play it acoustically. so are the gibsons really worth the extra 10 grand plus? as a side note, is it true that gibson has discontinued their carved archtops?
AlanC Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 The Herb Ellis (ES-165 same body as an ES-175) also has a floating pick up and acoustically it sounds great. Can't compare to the Epiphones though.
