scottierocker Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I finally got my pickguard installed. This is one beautiful guitar, and NONE like it!! Enjoy...
BigKahune Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 OMG that's seriously gorgeous! I missed the story on this. Please fill me in.
greg420blues Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Veruh nice! How you liking that ebony neck?? That's my next geetar if I can help it ... an SG with an ebony neck. Maybe a custom is in my future?
scottierocker Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 OMG that's seriously gorgeous! I missed the story on this. Please fill me in. Thanks man!! I just got into a spat with some fellas on here about how a Les Paul or SG can still be valuable' date=' even with mods. Then I dumped about $500 into my recently aquired 2002 SG Supreme to prove my point. Most of the trash talk originated on the Les Paul forum, as I also seriously modded my Les Paul Studio (avatar). Everyone on the SG forum was very supportive. I added: Tonepros locking bridge and tailpeice Faber locking tailpiece studs Grover locking tuners Graphtech saddles 61' pickguard and all nickel hardware. Here's a "before" pic: [img']http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u159/hard_core_scott/TheMare-2.jpg[/img] It was already a beautiful guitar, but there were others out there like it. Not anymore! At least, not unless some one pulls a copy-cat move!!

Maybe a custom is in my future? No complaints. Slim-taper neck and super soft fretboard, and the action's as low as you wanna get. It plays itself.
jimmiJAMM Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 There's nothing wrong with customizing or modifying your instrument but It's simply a fact that it will never be worth as much as a 100% SG. End of story.
scottierocker Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 There's nothing wrong with customizing or modifying your instrument but It's simply a fact that it will never be worth as much as a 100% SG. End of story. See what I mean? I paid around $1300 for this guitar. Tell me I won't get more than that for it if I sold it today. You're assesment is correct' date=' but only 99% of the time. I paid $500 for my Les Paul Studio: [img']http://i167.photobucket.com/albums/u159/hard_core_scott/LesPaulStudio2-1.jpg[/img] Is that worth less now too?
jimmiJAMM Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I mean no disrespect to you or your instruments and you'd probably get a decent price on eBay from someone who's looking for something unique but try and sell it to a serious collector and it's another story. Customized guitars are a niche market and simply not as highly sought after. From the Blue Book of Electric Guitars 11th Edition.
scottierocker Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 A serious collector?! It's an SG Supreme, and a Les Paul Studio. Who's gonna sell a used Les Paul Studio to a collector?!? Fact is, if I didn't modify it, I'd be hard pressed to get what I paid for out of it. Your book doesn't apply here. It's the same principle with classic cars. Take a '69 Shortbed Chevy C-10, and completely mod it out in your garage, you're not going to get as much as you would restoring it to it's original specs, but you are going to get more out of it than if it was junk when you got it. Such is the case for the Les Paul. In the case of my SG, I may very well fetch MORE for this guitar than someone who has one bone stock in the same condition. Doesn't have to be a collector, just a guy who likes SGs looking for an ordinary SG. Back to my hot-rod analogy: If you create a car that looks like it could've been stock, but was never actually produced (i.e.: A Chevy SS C-10) that looks clean and like a production model, then you can fetch MORE at an auction than a stock C-10. This has been proven hundreds of times, just depends on the model and how smart the design was. Obviously, my guitar looks fairly stock. I believe it's very smart as well. In this case, you're wrong, and so is your book. End of story.

I like seeing that you own your guitars. They're yours and nobody elses. Yes, some players like to own their guitars and don't give a sh*t what the frickin' Blue Book says. Scottierocker... Again - they look fantastic.

jimmiJAMM Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Beam me up, scottie. ;) I want whatever it is you're smoking.
scottierocker Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 I'm smoking wood shavings from the holes I drilled in my SG Supreme, wrapped in page 58 of the Blue Book of Electric Guitars 11th Edition. It's some good smoke. I paid $1300 for this guitar. SG Supremes sell for between $1250 and $1600 usually. I could sell mine for $1600-$1800 right now. You're wrong man. Face it.
hbomb76 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Definitely completes the look and makes it more familiar! I don't care what anyone says about "ruining" a flamey top or "altering" a fine instrument, if it feels right, do it. And in this case I think it improved it (and I don't even like that model, for what it's worth, but that's a sensible mod!). H-Bomb

Face it.[/quote'] This from the guy smoking wood shavings. My comments were never about looks, so don't take it so personally. We've merely been debating the value of modified vs.original SGs. Any dealer will tell you that the more original a guitar is, the more valuable it will become. I've actually customized more than a few guitars myself. Cars and motorcycles too.

jimmiJAMM Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Yeah, Burt Reynolds called... he wants it back.
max2343 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 No Sally Fields won it in the Divorce settlement (along with Burts hair club-hair piece) and wants it back and she is sending out the Goffy Sheriff and his duputy to get-it
scottierocker Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 Yeah' date=' Burt Reynolds called... he wants it back.[/quote'] Famous people call me all the time. It's cool.:- Yep, it's the '79 hoodbird. I thought it was pretty rock and roll. I still do, regardless of what the gramps says. Can't sell it to a guitar collector (sheesh), but I could sell it to Trans-Am aficionados!! Newsflash, I'll never be able to sell ANY of my guitars to a collector anyway. These bad-boys get used. They'll be in barrooms all over the south before long. Sure to get some new character marks along the way. I can picture it now: SCENE: We're playing some dive in Tennessee, and it's a good crowd. SG Supreme has went through his set, so now "Bandit" is up playing. SG begins to mingle. All of the sudden he sees a mint 2005 Les Paul Standard, and starts hollerin' at her (Naturally, the LP's the female in the story:-# ), when all the sudden, her boyfriend, an off white 80's something Telecaster gets offended. Before I know it, my SG has him hemmed up and is turning him into sawdust when I notice two strats (must be cousins) coming to jump him. Before I can move, "Bandit" has already jumped off the stage and round-housed the two of them, Chuck Norris-style. We laugh about it over beers and check for damage. Yep, couple of scrapes, but I wouldn't change them for the world. We spend the rest of the night makin' fun of yuppies who barely take their guitars out of their cases to save them from "damage" that would render them less valuable to collectors. Before we leave, we leave a Blue Book of Electric Guitars 11th Edition in the middle of the men's room with a fresh 'duece' on top. We run out to the car gigglin' like kids the whole way. ~End
max2343 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 Yea I thought it looked like one. It does look nice on a black Gibby. And man you should try some of the old Mopar Decals of the late 60's and early 70's. You got a good touch with the Graphics on Axes and modifiying them to look better. Just don't try putting a decal of hair on Axe.

The truth is, I planned these both out very carefully, drew up schematics, shopped at different places to stay on budget, and took my time getting it done. I do graphic design, so I trust my eye. Came in handy too, notice I curved the wings of the hoodbird to fit the carved top of the LP. The wings on the TA run straight up the sides of the hood. It's just attention to detail. Naturally, these look alot better in person. At least for now!
scottierocker Posted April 21, 2009 Author Posted April 21, 2009 LIGHTEN THE **** UP MAN. I thought a story posted in jest about two personified guitars in a bar fight would be pretty light! I didn't mean to offend ya', I was just foolin!!
max2343 Posted April 21, 2009 Posted April 21, 2009 I don't think Axe would get Pissed. He can take a joke and he can sure dish-it out. Here is a photo of one I just sold 2 years ago. It was real nice That Axe of yours sure would look good sitting right next to it.
