What scale did George Harrison use?

Hey all,

So, this is a little off topic, but what scale did George Harrison use when he played slide on such albums as Extra Texture and All Things Must Pass. It's a great sound, but I have never been able to replicate it. I suppose it's some form of a regular pentatonic scale.

Does anyone know the answer to this?

I think it was just a regular scale... The digital ones came out much later....

Well, I'm sure it is just a regular scale. I can't help but wonder if he is skipping certain notes or playing out of the scale at some point. I'm just having a lot of trouble finding this out.

I don't think George thought in terms of scales and all that technical stuff.

One of the things I've always loved about George's playing is that his guitar parts are so melodic that the technical aspect really doesn't matter.

By the way he played I assume that what he did was plan out all the licks beforehand meticulously and then worked on the execution.

I've actually been trying to think melodically instead of technically and I've found that scales are great but once you've mastered them you have to find a way to break free of them, or to use them as stepping stones.

A very good point. I guess I will have to listen to the records a little bit harder.

George played slide, in Standard tuning, mostly. But, his "slide" playing was pretty unique, and very melodic!

Great stuff! Like his wonderful "regular" guitar work, it was always tasteful, and perfect, for the song(s).

Added: A lot of it was "blues" scale, but phrased differently, and quite a lot of it was "Indian" music

influenced, as well. From his "Sitar" influences and playing experience.

Excellent point and one of the main reasons why I have, and always will, love George's work on both solo and Beatles albums!
