jeff737jeff727 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I am putting in a set of P-90s in my 1978 LP Deluxe and I need to know what value pots and caps you guys have in your P-90 equiped LPs. Gibson tech support says they put 500 ohm in the current USA models and 300 ohm in the current Custom models. I am putting in single coil P-90s, not stacked or P-100s. Anybody know what is or was used in the '56 Goldtops or the '54 Black Beautys. Thanks!
Rocky4 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 This might help http://www.seymourduncan.com/images/products/electric/specialized/501025-100.pdf

Thanks![/quote'] You might want to hang fire a bit before you put P90's in your guitar -- Kinman has a new set of P90 pickups that look to be the hot setup. He mentions (and I've noticed) that most manufacturers of P90's these days build pickups that actually have LESS power than the originals, because the originals are so much noisier than even single-coil strat pickups. By reducing the power, they reduce the noise, but they also change the tone of the pickup. Kinman has produced some *really* nice noiseless pickups for Strats (pricey, though), and he's claiming that the P90's he's introducing (should be shipping in June/July) will have the same power as the early P90's, but with no noise. I have *no* idea what these things are going to cost, but based on his strat-type pickups, I've got a guitar ready for them. http://www.kinman.com/Shop/hx90.htm BTW, I've actually got a '50's black one with a P90 in the bridge and a bar-post pickup in the neck -- it's a pain to get to it in storage, but I'll see if I can check the pots for values. Meanwhile, I'd be inclined to go with a 500. Certainly never liked 300's for Humbuckers... Meanwhile, I'm putting a set of SD's P-Rails in an LP clone currently configured with ceramic Humbuckers. Tried them on another guitar and really liked the sounds available. P90 coil, single (rail) coil together in one pickup, no modification (or extra screw holes) to the guitar to put them in. SD even has switching available *mounted on a bezel*. I'm considering trying those out to avoid push-pulls (hate those) or extra holes in the guitar.
elantric Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Anybody know what is or was used in the '56 Goldtops or the '54 Black Beautys. Thanks! 500K ohm Log taper - for both Vol and Tone pots - with a .022uF Tone Cap.
jeff737jeff727 Posted April 25, 2009 Author Posted April 25, 2009 Thanks for the info.. Since my LP Deluxe has the same route as the P-90s, this should be a simple unsolder and resolder job. I think I will keep the 500ohm pots in for now and see how they work. I can always roll back the volume and/or tone of they are a bit too bright. That 50's Black bueaty you have is an awesome guitar. I am hoping to get similar sounds out of mine when it's done. I am going to put in a set of soap bar P-90s from Fat Tone. They are reasonably priced and claim to produce some good tones. Yes they are wound over seas, but I don't think I have shell out a ton of $ to get the sound I am after. Please post how your SD P-Rails sound. I may put them in my other LP.
