jannusguy Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 what strings are you using to get the most out of your AJ? i'd like to know your opinions as i am about to have my new acquisition set up. wondering if there's a consensus. thx
Red 333 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Gibson Masterbuilt Phosphor Bronze, but not just for the AJ. I use 'em on all my acoustics.
maninblack Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I don't have Masterbuilts on at the moment, but I think I am going to put them back on next time. They do seem to work best on my AJ.
Deadgrateful Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I love the sound of D'dario PB's, but only for the first few days, then I hate the apparent muddyness they seem to have. Elixirs are a compromise (they still wear out after a week of finger picking) and Gibsons masterbuilt are ok, but seem hard to come by in shops.
jannusguy Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 what gauge masterbuilts? and here's a dumb question, are they readily available in retail outlets such as GC? or,do i have to order them from gibson. seems the only time i've had them on my guitars is when they are new from bozeman.
Sitric Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I've recently started using Martin SP Medium/Lights. www.myspace.com/brendevereux www.brendandevereux.com
HellboundGreaser Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I'm pretty liberal with using different brands. I like experimenting with different strings and really havent found any that I don't like. What ever brand that I use they are always 12 gauge. Right now I have some elixer polywebs on my AJ that I like. Try a bunch of different brands and see what ya' like!
Dave in SLC Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 "I've recently started using Martin SP Medium/Lights." Interesting, I've recently started using the same! I like both the tension and the sound on my recent AJ. Dave in SLC
Taylor Player Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 I tried several and ended up coming back to the Elixir PB Nano's (12-54) that I use on my Taylor and now my 64 LG1 too. I love the tone of Elixir PB's after about the 2nd day. The beauty is that tone last's for a couple months for me so I really do love the longevity of the strings along with the nice tone I get from my AJ. I am mostly a fingerstyle player so if you strum or flat pick your mileage may vary.

Fred_Engr Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Taylor Player Good choice, I use the same except 0.013-0.056 Fred
Fred_Engr Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 PS I also use Ghs Fast-Fret to clean the strings which improves their life, restores the brightness, removes the build of gunk and makes them easier to play. Fred
ballcorner Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 In the manner prescribed by Tommy Emmanuel, I use two packs of one brand followed by one pack of a second brand. You can find his speech on this at YouTube. The brands I use are John Pearse PBs x2 then EJ16 D'Addario for the third pack. I have tried the following on the guitar before settling on these two: Gibson Masterbuilt - they sounded so dead I thought I had a stale pack so I bought another with same results. Martin SPs - took a while to play in and were pretty good, but they made the trebles more subtle and I prefer the ring Martin Eric Clapton - these are essentially SPs made in Mexico with silver trebles instead of gold coloured - they were nice but only for about two or three hours. Elixirs - Just as a condom feels like kissing through a window , , , Ernie Ball coated strings - great but $25 a pack here - not for the financially responsible Hope that helps. Congrats on the guitar.
