TinFish Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 Comfort, style, toggle switch position. I actually started liking them because of Kim Thayil and that Guild S-100 he used to play. Those were really nice guitars: After Fender bought out Guild and discontinued the S-100 I started trying out some SG's, and the rest as they say is history.

Jesus Is Dead In My Basement Posted April 23, 2009 Author Posted April 23, 2009 What SG is it? Its a 1963 Gibson SG.
SGman94 Posted April 23, 2009 Posted April 23, 2009 i went an acdc tribute concert and i saw the sg the angus guy was playing and that was the first guitar i saw in real life and i was just mesmerized by it and wen i started playing guitar i knew i had to have one
InfiniteSingularity Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Because it looks so much more awesome than the Les Paul. Also it sounds cooler.
SuperGiovane Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Neck, higher frets access, Angus Young Anyway, I think I'll buy an LP also, one day
fartz Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I liked how my SG felt in my hands and how it sounded better than any of the LPs I played. I really never liked the SG much until I played the one I bought. Price really didn't make the difference but it was a bonus.

Ah, how my miss my S-100. I should never have sold it. I really do think it's a better guitar than your run-of-the-mill SG Standard; much better build quality. I keep checking ebay in hopes that I find a cherry one. I love my SG Classic. The body style of the SG just suites me better. I've always been a fan of Woodstock/Leeds era WHO, and watching Townsend jump around with his SG sold me. You just can't (well, it's tougher) be that mobile with a Les Paul, as much as I like them. The SG style feels like an extension of my body, and I love that.
Demoryn Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Several reasons: the SG felt more comfortable and more balanced, I liked the look of it more. One huge factor was my Angus Young influence, which turned me on to the guitar in the first place. And I hate to add this, but it's true: SGs are just a lot more affordable
TinFish Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I should add "upper fret access" to my reasons as well. That's also a huge bonus and something I don't like about Les Pauls.
SolidGuitar Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Upper fret access was my main reason. The thinner body and slightly darker tone was a plus as well.
80LPC Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I really liked the style with those devilish horns. What it boils down to is the shape is so different to the outline of an acoustic guitar - unlike the LP, so it has a more rebellious appearance. I had the option of buying "The Paul", or "The SG". I thought the Paul looked cut-price, but the SG didn't look much different to it's upmarket brother. So, it was an easy choice.
SGman94 Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 when i saw it i thought it was the scariest thing ever i thought satan had possessed a guitar and when i heard it i was sold on that thought so for a while before i knew the name i refered to it as the devil's guitar...which made it all the more interesting to me
Geff Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 Initially it was a looks thing but other factors were price and fret access. A later factor that didnt influence my initial purchase but would make me buy again is weight.
Kurt Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I didn´t! I got both and wouldn´t want to miss one of `em. Greetings Kurt
Murph Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I like a double cut better. The SG was the first good guitar I ever played. I also think they look better. I gigged a '72 Les Paul Recording for 14 years, but ended up back with the SG, and the 339.
cat&mouse Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I always wanted an LP, but when it came down to it, I liked the SG better. It's a lot lighter, won't give me back problems, great tone, looks great, feels great. I've always been influenced by Cream-era Clapton and the moment I saw a picture of Clapton with his SG as a kid I've always wanted one. Someday I'll get my hands on a Gibson LP, but it'll be awhile. I'm quite satisfied with my SG.
Swmcv2007 Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 I had the money for a real nice used Standard in ebony that I had been eyeing for about a month. On the day I went to buy it there were a lot of people in line so I went to the used section and saw a ebony SG Standard on the wall. I never really cared about SGs at that time, but something about this one hypnotized me a little bit. So I took it down and played it unplugged. Amazing. Then I plugged it in to a really nice used Laney amp that happened to be sitting in front of me with an amp chord. At this point I was starting to feel a little confused and lightheaded. Then I looked at the price tag and it said $900 dollars. After that I freaked out because this guitar didn't have a single scratch and it was absolutely perfect. Another reason was that it was $500 dollars cheaper than the LP which didn't play or sound as well. I had to know what this baby could do so I cranked the amp to 8 and busted into my Hendrix'd out version of Helter Skelter. After a few seconds I turned the amp all the way down and stood up, apologized, and bought it. This all happened within 5-6 minutes and before I knew it I was outside the store holding the case to a beautiful ebony SG Standard and to this day I STILL haven't found another electric guitar that sends shivers down my spine like my SG did when I first played it.
Jesus Is Dead In My Basement Posted April 25, 2009 Author Posted April 25, 2009 You guys are making me want to go for the SG, You guys are a horrible influence. I can really see myself playing an SG over a Les Paul.
